First time to the thread today . I have a 97 p38 , been able to repair myself over the last 5 years now , but this problem has me dumb struck 😞. It's doesn't start straight away and when I pull up at traffic lights it stalls . Yet driving around it seems to run fine . I figure it has to be a sensor . But which one 😄😄 . I would love some thoughts . Cheers

Thanks for that , I checked the mag sensor , was plugged in . Left car running and pulled out plug , motor cut out . I understand that is what it is supposed to do ?? Also how do I check the idle air sensor ?? I have a spare p38 here , will pull that one out and c what it does . Aggg give a gear box to put in or a motor but not this fiddly stuff . Cheers

I was having some weird idling problems, after trying several things, I eventually got a new MAF sensor and all has been well since.
Have you tried cleaning yours? They do get a build up of crud over time and can affect the readings.
Only use proper maf sensor cleaning spray.
I would also take the maf plug off and spray some contact cleaner on the contacts, could be a simple as that.
I'd give the butterfly valve a clean too, use some throttle body and carby cleaner, pay special attention to the edges.
Any build up on the valve can cause rough idling/stalling at idle problems.
I'd hook it up to some diagnostic equipment, might point you in the right direction.

I have done the clean thing . No difference . Put my spare one in , no difference. I have lost the best landrover mech in the world , Dave at rover tech retired at Christmas so there is no one northside of Brisbane anymore . Does anyone else know of any good mechs (that actually know any thing about landrovers )Brisbane Northside ??? Cheers for the responses so far 👍👍👍

You might want to check for air leaks past the maf. Easiest way is to put overpressure (not too much) on the air intake and listen / feel for leaks.

Good suggestion prelude, that happened to me also, the big air hose was not sealing properly on mine, pushed it right up, tightened the hose clamp and it fixed the problem.
