View Full Version : Rubber engine forward/back movement limiter ?

Hi All,

While hanging around under my S2A last night, I noticed under the gear box area on left side that there is a bracket/rod connecting the gearbox area to the chassis via some rubber grommet type things at both connection ends.

I would guess this is some sort of mechanism to limit forward / back movement of the engine - true ?

Anyway, can anyone clarify what this bracket/rod is called, and if anyone knows what the rubber "grommets" part number is, I would ver much like to know, as one of mine looks a little worse for wear.

Thanks
John

"Engine Tie rod" - Part of 8 blade fan kit. Bushes are 7014, two each end. I don't know how readily available they are, but I would go into a good auto parts place with a sample - I doubt the exact design is very critical. The tie rod is intended to keep the fan from touching the radiator under heavy braking.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply, but the thing I am referring to is nowhere near the fan blade, it's under the gearbox bracing the gearbox to the chassis cross member that goes under it. I'll try to get a photo.

I'm wondering if it might be a military add on, as the plate welded to the cross member looks a bit after market :-)

Cheers,
John

It is exactly what I said - part of the eight blade fan kit. And yes, it is underneath, bracing the gearbox to the chassis. And yes, it can be considered military equipment since all (most anyway) Australian 2as used by the army were equipped with the eight bladed fan. But it is not specifically military, being listed in the Parts catalogue for IIA, III, 109V8 Optional Equipment Part No RTC9842CE September 1988.

I removed the eight blade fan on mine to reduce noise and slightly increase fuel economy - the standard fan just bolts on.

That Tie- Rod for Engine is even listed in the 1961 parts catalogue..W.

its a tie rod to help stop the fan going through the radiator . I can understand why its part of the 8 blade kit, tho my LW has one as standard with 4 blade. Ive kept it on with my EV conversion but doubt I now need it with my disc handbrake as the handbrake lever no longer pulls the motor forward, and there is now no fan to go through radiator.

I found a pack of shocker rubbers at super cheap auto - fit perfectly

Ah got it !! Thanks John and everyone, make sense now, just seems weird that something relating to the fan is under the gearbox.

John, thanks for the bush part number too. Funny thing is that I only have a four blade fan.

Here's a couple of pics anyway :

I suspect they may have been fitted to a lot of vehicles at either assembler or dealer level after a fan hit a radiator. Its a bit difficult to see how it could happen with the standard fan unless a couple of engine mounts failed though.
