Pre Fuel Filter Discover 4

Hey Guys,

As I'm heading far up north, I thought it would be wise investing in a pre fuel filter.

Has anyone fitted one to their D4?

I trawled through the forum but didn't find much luck!

Why do you say that?

I've seen a few on the forum with oil catch cans and reckon they're excellent, so why not a pre fuel filter?

I have been considering getting the 45 litres per minute one from Mr Funnel. Is that size an overkill? Does anyone have one of these? It looks to be quite large to be storing back inside the vehicle after filling up. I am also guessing you need to buy the flexible filler extension as well?

Any changes to the fuel system (restrictions to flow etc) can mess up the vehicle.

The factory filter has water separation and does a pretty good job.

With all the remote fuel ups, Jerry can top ups etc that I’ve done, I’m yet to have a fuel issue.

The vehicle has water detection, if it happens just stop and drain or replace the filter.. doesn’t take long.


As for catch cans on a TDV6. I personally won’t be doing it, I’ve closed the EGRs so all that goes in my intake is air and a minimal oil mist. The TD5 needed it but the V6s don’t seem to suffer anywhere near as much, having a pretty good separation set up from the factory.

Some 3.0 had a bit more due to the oil drain issue.

That sounds like the one I have (Mine is the F15C). I reasoned that I could use it at an outback fuel pump if necessary, as well as from my jerry cans on the roof via a siphon tube (a job it did very well making it easy to avoid spilling fuel). The drawback is that it is large at 21cm across so storage might be an issue.

Reading the Mr Funnel website a bit more I can see that the 15C (45 litres per minute) cannot be used with the flexible hose. You need one of the smaller ones to use that. I was also thinking it could be used at outback fuel pumps but I see two issues. Firstly you will have to guess when the tank is getting full and then I expect it might be frowned upon if you spill diesel on the ground.

I might just get the smaller one (the 3C at 13 litres per minute) for the jerry cans.

I found some clear plastic tubing in Bunnings that fitted the end of the funnel pipe well. I only needed a short piece to allow the funnel to be upright and channel the fuel into the tank. I don't have any experience of the smaller ones.
