Just wondering if anyone has upgraded their 6x6 turbo and exhaust? I’m pretty sure that my turbo is shagged, as it is burning about 3-4 litres per week and blowing a lot of smoke. There is also excessive play in the turbo shaft.
im awaiting a price from KLR for a complete kit but just wondering if anyone has upgraded and what difference they have found? The vehicles are work vehicles that cover about 1000km/week and are fully loaded.

I would just buy a more modern T2 turbo and get a 3” mandrel bent exhaust. I assume the factory Garret unit is water cooled.

Get one of the holset hx30w turbos off eBay, great turbo for these motors, better than the klr one, and will bolt straight on

I have upgraded both my turbo and exhaust to a KLR kit and a 3" exhaust. It is a Garrett GT22 wastegated turbo without water cooling. The main reason I upgraded is because I changed diff ratios to 3.54 and needed more power than the original turbo would give especially lower in the rev range. So far I am reasonably happy with the setup even though I need to do some more work on managing EGT's. I don't run an intercooler and with the outback Qld summer temperatures I am getting pretty high EGT's when pulling up a long hill. So it looks like I will have to do something about an intercooler or just ease off the pedal going up hills. On the flat it is fine with temps around 350 - 400 post turbo. If you are going to change it DEFINITELY add a boost and a pyrometer gauge so you can keep an eye on exhaust temps. These motors are good for max 750 degrees C continuous but that is measured pre turbo.

Thanks for the reply’s, I will look into these options, however I can’t see the point in fitting a second hand turbo, might as well spend the money and do it properly. I’m a bit concerned Bearman about your information about EGTs, as I might have 2 or 3 different drivers in that vehicle that may let the temps get up too high. I basically need a good bullet proof setup that gives us a bit more grunt but reliability is the key.
my other 6x6 pulls away from this particular 6x6 easily on he same long hills and both are kitted out identical and running at 5.1ton GVM .

Those turbos i linked aren't used. They have been fitted to new engines, but not run. Quite a few on the perentie facebook pages have used them. BadCo. on here might have even included a write up in his turbo thread.

And it's far far cheaper than the klr kit, which you will get no additional gain from other than am emptier wallet[emoji4]

As bearman says, fit a EGT gauge so you can see what’s happening when you drive it. Then adjust the fuel pump to get the EGT range you’re comfortable with.

Thing is with that current turbo, to lower the egts you would need to reduce the fueling.

Vern, what about fitting those turbos to a 4x4 perentie as a replacement instead of a 6x6? Any concerns/differences to take into account? No difference at all. It's the same motor.

No difference at all. It's the same motor. Both the 4bd1, but didn't know if the 6x6 got a different liner and gasket set as an original turbo from the factory or if they were identical right down the line. Thank you for the quick response.

Identical bar nitrided crank, oil filter setup, and torque cam in injector pump. Oh and pistons, but later 4bd1 had the same pistons. Not that any of this makes a bit of difference.
