Split Intake Hose 2014 Defender

Last week I got the loud hissing noise in my 2014 Defender and a few minutes later it went into limp mode. As suspected it was a split intake hose.

So I’m about 6 months out of warranty, only travelled about 40000km, regularly serviced by my local LR dealer and I have been struck down by a known issue with this model.

Repair bill is $120 parts and about $300 in labour to replace the hose with an equally brittle hose. Anyone had any experience with getting leniency on the warranty in a similar situation? Anyone requested that LR replace the hose with a superior aftermarket silicone equivalent?

I contacted my local 4x4 specialist and their full engine hose kit and fitment was much better value than the service LR are offering, I've dealt with BAS before and was very happy with their service but the time to get the hoses here could be an issue.

The car was towed to the dealer by LR Roadside Assist and I was given a loan car so I'm not sure where I stand, can I tell them not to do the work?

There was a recall campaign on these hoses, possibly the earlier 2•4 variant.
From memory the hose and steering shaft knuckle could rub on the hose.
A braket was fitted with a slightly different shaped hose.
Ask to check if the recall applies and has been done and if so was it fitted correctly.

If its the drivers side hose, then yes its a fault as its the steering knuckle that wears through it. there is a bracket on later ones that fixed this. If a later 2.2 then its the passenger side hose that splits, just like with 50 million other turbo diesels, oil ingress into rubber. Except Jeeps that have factory silicone hoses fitted.

As for the cost, the labour cost you quoted is ridiculous.

Sounds like replacement with silicon hoses is the go. Anyone tried the Terrafirma brand? All Four x Four here in Newcastle can supply and install a full set of silicone hoses for around the same price as LR will replace the one.

Contact BellAutoService and order his Silicone Hose kit.I bought bas silicone hoses for my 2.4 and installed them myself last November. Btw, It's a pita to install the driver one. I followed the instructions to trim the turbo end of the hose by about 20mm, upon completion I checked the clearance between the knuckle and the hose, and I could easily insert my fingers between them. Yesterday I found the knuckle is rubbing the hose and has damaged the hose. Any idea why the knuckle started rubbing the hose?

There have been a couple of warranty campaigns to rectify the rubbing of the RH hose. MY 2012 2.2 was flatbedded in limp mode to perth on several occasions when it was under warranty for that reason
First fix they tried to stabilise with a wire coil around the hose. This resulted in the steering knuckle bolt getting stuck on the wire coil during a left hand turn and fouling the steering! Almost drove into my dam
The next fix was a bracket to support the hose on the alternator mount. Thats been OK for a few years
Later the intercooler hose failed on the LH side as well. I ordered a terrafirma kit but the parts where the wrong size for 2.2. Sent them back and got BAS that are extra ply and look well made
You fit the hoses on the LH side by unbolting the coolant pump and swinging it clear on its hoses without draining the coolant138066
