Mickey Thompson ATZ or BFG KO2s?

Getting close to needing new tyres for the 110. Been really happy with the Continentals (85,000km with some life left) but can’t seem to find them any more.

Will be doing 50% highway but the rest gravel roads and hilly farm.

Torn run between these two tyres. Like the BFGs but not sure if they will be up to our muddy conditions come winter.

Thoughts?

I’m considering getting some Michelin LTX AT2’s as a change from the Bridgestone 661’s, after reading reviews here and online. Anyone else recommend the Michelin’s?

I've got Mickey Thomson ATZ's at the moment, definitely don't like them as much as my BFG muds I had before. They cost about the same too. I get about the same roar with the ATZ's as with the muds even though the ATZ's are an all terrain tyre. That aside, they grip well in both dry and wet so far, I've only had them for about 30,000ks though.

BFGs cope just fine with the muddy conditions in the VHC. Can't see WA throwing them that much of a challenge. I don't have them, mind you, but my son had them on his HiLux and now his Ranger and swears by them. Ditto my step son on his Prado.

I'm having a good run with dick cepic FC2's (i got sold with the "strongest side wall in the known universe..." bit). Also liked the look of the nitto trail grapplers for next time, not as agressive in person as they look in the interwebs. IMO you need a square shoulder for gravel, round shouldered muddies just don't hook up. I have had a twig go through the side of a bfg, it put me off a bit.

I have the Goodyear Wrangler MT on my 2016 110 (23,000 kms), and BFG KO2’s on my 2018 Prado (7000) from new. Was thinking recently of the future replacement for the Goodyear and was considering the KO 2’s for it as well but a mate swears by his Coopers AT3! I like the look of the Mickey Thompson’s but the subject of tyres is fraught with danger on these forums [bigsmile][bigwhistle]

I run Bridgestone Dueler m/t d674 on my defender 110, in 285/75/16 size. They are an outstanding tyre off-road and they are actually, really decent on road too, not loud at all and handle fine on wet sealed stuff. When I got mine, they were about $230 a corner and every bit as good if not better than the bf km2’s I used to run, and much, much cheaper. The d674s have an open lug spacing, so I have found they work best when the tyre pressures are set a little lower; I run mine on 32- 34psi on the road, 12-18 on the sand and 18-25 on an unsealed/track. My missus runs Mikey Thomson Deagan 38 At/s on her 2017 Ford Ranger, these Mikeys are 50/50 road, off-road. That car does a lot of high way k’s and a lot of gravel roads and some beach driving. Those tyres are amazing too, capable off-road and in snow, but not too aggressive or noisy on the highway. If you need something that is really capable off-road, but still with nice on-road manners, I'd look at those duelers!

How about the Kumho MT51s? More aggressive than an A/T and better on road than a M/T. Plus silica compound tread so grippy and long wearing. My experience of these has been very good.
At the end of the day the BFG A/Ts have been the default go to tyre for decades because they do work well everywhere. Not the best, not the worst, but a good compromise of all attributes. The newer KO2 is a big improvement over the venerable KO, and was well overdue.
Many good options out there. It really depends on what you want them to do well, and what you don't mind trading off to get those specifics. That's personal choice.

I’d go the Mickey T, I’ve just got 92k on a set of 265/75 ATZ on a heavily loaded 130, I’m also running 235/85 on one of the 110 utes and got 45k on a set of BFG muddies. Can come down to weight, driving style and pressure but Ive gone another set of Mickeys.

I asked the owner about 8 months ago and he didnt hesitate to say Mickey T's

Good to hear you like the Kumho’s. I like the look of the AT51’s as a less chunky but versatile option because I don’t need MT’s ...has anyone tried these?
