The disengage lever of my TJM WINCH won’t go into disengage
if I take a hammer to it I can tap it in ....but with difficulty due to the tight spot it’s in in the bar

I took out the retaining screw on the lever with an Alan key cleaned the lever and put some bearing grease in there ...but still will only move half way between engage And disengage

when I tapped it into disengage and ran the cable out the winch woeked fine to roll the cable back in it’s just the lever that seems to be jamming

any ideas what to do ......don’t want to have to be hammer tapping it if I need to use the winch for real

It sounds like the winch is in need of a service, Remove it and give it a full service.
This way you will know if it is just a matter of the Old grease not doing its job Or there is some other problem like a worn or broken component that needs to be replaced.
These sort of issues can be largely avoided by either regular use of the winch or just pulling 10-15m of rope off and winding it back on about once a month [thumbsupbig]

Thanks chaps ......did what you should always do in these situations .....went and had a cup of tea ........came back 15 mins later and I guess the grease had worked its way into the lever workings ....and lo and behold it works ....a little stiff but with a bit of moving it back and forth over the next week it should be working fine ......and yes I do try to run out my winch and reroll it .....but not every month ........servicing it is a daunting task .....will work up the courage for that

Why post this in the Defender area? It's not Defender specific.

Why post this in the Defender area? It's not Defender specific.

Terribly sorry old chap ....this winch is fitted to a defender 110 and defender TJM bar hence comments re difficulty of applying the hammer in the limited space ( not made clear ) ... got used to posting my problems on the Defender section and am super impressed with the help I get from the always generous and willing experts here .

Will try in future to be more discerning where I place my questions .
