Hi, I have an engine watchdog temperature gauge and wanted to know what I should set the max temperature to on for the TD5 engine?

My coolant temps can spike past that on a climb, (according to the Nanocom) but I've yet to see a measured head temp over 87°

The Engine Watchdog comes with easy to read instructions - i’m happy to share them with you if yours are lost. But basically you set it to 5 deg above the max temp observed during the post installation monitoring period. Mine is still set as it came out of the box on 100 deg. My highest observed temp during this last summer was 97 deg whilst stationary in traffic but otherwise the range is 85 > 92 but what you get will depend on where the sensor is mounted.

Ok, Normal range is 88-89 and up an hill with AC on went to 100 so I have it mounted on the head and wanted to know what the max temperature of the head till it warps eg 110 degrees?

I have mine bolted to an empty treaded insert on the exhaust side near the firewall. I’ve set it to alarm at 105*C, and when towing I’ve had it exceed that. AFAIK the head gasket hasn’t been replaced, my D2a was at 170,000Km when I bought it and now has 290,000Km.

As a guess I would say anything over 115 deg would be doing damage
My TM1 alarm is set at 100, the sensor is mounted near the FPR and read about 4 deg lower than the Nanocom, the Nanocom alarm is on 100 also.

As advised by our very own local (now in Vic?) guru Blacknight, the TD5 head/motor is designed to be able to run at up to 120 degrees C if need be.
My beasties also run normally at 88-92 (Nanocoms permanently fitted in instrument mode), but I have been up to 108 in the D2a heavy towing up a looong hill at high revs (2nd gear) in 40 degrees ambient. Because I do a bit of towing, I have upped my Nanocom alarm from 100 to 105, plus I have a low coolant alarm fitted (ex Dave's Shop).
