Well after 20 years the second love of my life,my Tdi Defender needs new brakes.I'm going to go the whole hog, brake master cylinder, flexy hoses, reco calipers, two new rear hubs and rotors and pads.So what are the best rotors,OEM smooth, grooved, cross drilled, the ones with the half moon flick or dimpled.I like DBA,EBC rotors and I want to used EBC Green stuff pads, what have you guys used and are you happy with your set up. I assume it's a 300tdi - if you're "going the whole hog", think about adding a OME vacuum pump and OME booster (to account for age related deterioration) :) .

Both readily available ( at least they are here in the east :) ).

Pat honestly i would reco your own calipers using genuine pistons and seals. Front kits incl pistons are STC1280 and rear STC1281. A very easy job and YOU get to control the quality of parts. There are so many crap caliper kits out there...
And yes to the booster too. Use a TRW branded one.

This Pat ^

and contrary to popular belief, you can get bridge/spacer O rings too.
Serg/Uninformed has gone the whole hog and done this.

I wouldn't go Green Stuff pads these days from what a DBA engineer told me quite a few years ago and more recently Slunnie.
Slunnie reckons they are crap these days, he's using Yellow Stuff in his D2 with slotted DBA rotors and 285/75 tyres and couldn't be happier.

I used TRW/Lucas pads in my old Deefer, fitted when I did the engine and t/case. (Ferodo were used prior to that)
They are a ceramic type compound and worked well, good pedal feel and with no squeal from the rear on dirt! [biggrin]

I think I'm ordering QFM pads for the Disco this week, I just want to talk to them first before deciding on which compound.
I keep going around in circles, Pagid, QFM, Akebono, TRW..... [bigwhistle][biggrin]

I used a Bearmach vacuum pump when I replaced mine as at the time the OE Wabco were crap.

That was a few years ago now, Justin would have a far better idea on the current state of play.

TRW is the only way to go with the booster.
