New tyre options for Defender 110

2013 Defender 110 - my daily drive.

Currently running the out of the dealer, Continental Cross Contact AT 235/85 R16
Done 70k on them and they still have decent amount of tread to go! Nothing to complain about, no punctures and haven’t let me down anywhere I’ve been off-road.
Just starting to think options, whether to stick with the same or change over to something new?

What are other people running? What are your ideas?

Unfortunately you won’t be able to replace them. They don’t seem to be supplying them in the same size.

I am in the same boat and looking to change soon. Done 85,000km and still some tread left but need some more for our muddy fields come winter.

I had virtually landed on the BFG KO2s but been reading about the Toyo Open Country RT which look pretty good. Not sure how available they are though. Anyone here had any experience with them?

Seems that European tyre manufacturers are not making 235/85R16’s. Hopefully it’s not a worrying trend. Ive found lately that few tyre shops carry them in stock anymore.

I’ve been looking at the Toyo’s, they seem to be available $280. But thinking I’ll try the Kumho AT51 $270, because I don’t want something as aggressive as BFG $320, they look similar to the excellent Michelin ATXLT2 which are no longer available, and have good reviews. Been running Bridgestone D661’s $299 for years and they’re very durable, but I’d like to try something new. It’s a tough decision though when $1000 is a lot of money!

Anyone tried the Kumho’s?

I am really keen on the 255/85R16 size for my 2013 (Tdci) DCPU 110. Just replaced a set of Maxxis MTs that i have had for a few years in that size.

Would have liked to go to ATs in that size but there is little to no choice of AT tyres in that size.

So settled again for 255/85R16 MT tyres. This time they are Toyo Open Country MT.

Funnily enough, I found the BFG KO2's quieter than the conti's when I changed over at 67000 km.

If anyone in south east queensland is chasing some 235/85r16 continentals I've got 4 that came on my 2013 110 when it was new. 12k km on them. Still on factory alloys but will seperate them.

I like the skinnies Neil ...better in sand and mud IMO - the longer narrow footprint when deflated is like a caterpillar track, less frontal resistance; and also I find them lighter on the steering etc on road. If you could still get decent 7.50R16’s I’d be sticking with them.

Really loving them, Zeros..... They grip to wet and dry tarmac. Haven't had them offroad yet. And plush... its like the tyre shop replaced my springs&shocks as well as the tyres.

(Psst..... and at the risk of a tall skinnies vs wide floaters debate starting - I agree with you that tall skinnies are best!)

👍😎 no debate needed! ...I’ve always thought buying new tyres is a bit akin to buying a new bed. An expensive gamble! ..No plush for me though. I prefer a firm bed! So prob why I like 661’s and Koni Raids !! Oh the dilemma! No wonder so many tyre posts!

I’m running quiet a few utes at the moment, mainly for fast windy tarmac, fast rough dirt and lots of low range work all loaded to GVM.
The 5 defenders are running a mix of 235/85 and 265/75 Mickey T, BFG KO2 muddies, and general grabbers. The general grabber in 235/85 have been sensational as an all rounder, but my pick is the Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 in 265/75.
i changed them at 92k with zero issues. I’m also running maxis on a couple of DMax with promising results. I’d be keen to know how toyo open country’s go from anyone who has them..

As mentioned above - I have Toyo Open Country MT tyres in 255/85R16 fitted to stock Boost Alloys on my 2013 110 DCPU. But they have only been fitted for a couple of hundred km, all onroad Sydney commute. So really cannot give any useful feedback on the tyres yet.

Maybe in a year can give a decent report.

Defender 110 never weighing less than 3.4 . Toyo 265 / 75 /16 AT with about 35000 k , 35" MT with about 6000 k .The MT s are chipping quite badly and expect probably a usefull life of about 35000k and the ATs 50000 Both are reasonably quiet and grip well in wet or dry. As a fair percentage of Ks they are used on are washed out extremly rough sharp rock old mining tracks the low Ks are to be expected
