okay my thoughts so far are leave GC early friday morning say around 6am... Jump on a barge at Inskip Point around 11 then shoot up the beach until we find a nice secluded spot behind a dune for camping.

Setup camp by 1pm, have lunch then go exploring the island till sunday when we start packing up around lunchtime and head back.

Planning on having everyone completely self sufficient (a necessity when camping on the beachfront and not in grounds)... and completely open to suggestions and majority vote on what we actually do https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

How's that for a very vague and brief start to the discussion 8)

Sounds great. Only 1 problem, I have a 2yo daughter, and QPWS recommends people with young children camp in the fenced campgrounds so as to not be dingo bait. It's quit possible it's a beat up though. 8o

I am also interested in this trip, just have to work a few things out. If I were to go Id be definately bringing my 9 & 7 yr olds whom some of you met yesteday, plus I also be looking at bring my almost 3 yr old. So as Captain Rightfoot pointed out would be interested to know the go with enclosed area's etc. Also I have zip camping gear, so if anyone can point me in right direction for getting gear ie tents etc, that would be great. Bit too early for an offroad camper at this stage https://www.aulro.com/afvb/,

i was really hoping to be able to camp on the beach but depending on numbers and everyone else's requirements that could change... i guess we're not all completely self sufficient https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

But on the otherhand... once we know who is coming and get an idea of equipment people have and don't have... we can work out for sure what can be shared... eg: how many toilets would be needed etc.

As for kids, personally i can't see a problem with such a large group... no dingoes would come near that many people... just don't let the little ones walk off by themselves in the dark... but alas and thank god, i don't have any to worry about https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ so all up to you.

Can I suggest a blow up wading pool for the little kids (under 5 years of age) to paddle in at the camp site under a tarp. It makes a change to running across the highway to access the beach.

We have normally camped near Orange Creek which is between Ngala Rocks and Orchid Beach. Waddy Pt is a good campsite but very populated most times. I've never stayed on the southern end but a day trip to Kingfisher to swim in their pools is a nice break to the natural lakes and beauty of the island. Sometimes there is too much nature.

It's been about 5 years since the last trip so the QNPWS may have made drastic changes to camping regulations. Camping fees were usually paid at Rainbow Beach before leaving the mainland. I normally take a tinny camping now to carry most of the gear as my three boys are almost teenagers and they need more gear.

Does anyone know if generators have been banned on Fraser as that may assist large camps with many fridges to run.

Looking forward to the next installment.

Hi Captain
My son came camping with us from when he was 1.5years old and is now 15, and loved all of it. Kids HAVE to go camping with their parents and friends, it's an essential part of life and makes for better people and society. Some fringe benefits are of course swimming, tanning (in the course of activities), runnung on the beach, fishing, cooking, exploring etc etc. We need to teach our kids stuff and what better place or opportunity to do just that????

Stevo... setting up with camping gear can be a bit pricey... but once you've done it all your holidays are for free from there on https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ I do know that it's a very personal thing...what you get depends on a million things from how often you go to how deep your pockets are.

Maybe you might be better to borrow some stuff for this trip and look at what everyone else has? That way you can make a good call for you.

As to the difficulty level.... I've only been to fraser once, and it all seemed pretty cool to me. Having said that I'm sure I'll end up bogged to the axles next trip   I think it all depends on how much rain they have had. When it's dry it's very loose and can be difficult. Have a look at the conditions report link below.

One things for sure... if you stuggle then there are going to be a lot of people a lot worse off than you 8O Just make sure you have recovery points on your vehicle.

Hey Captain Rightfoot,

Thanks for that info and thoughts, much appreciated. Valid point on the camping gear etc, and yes if someone does go down in the sand at least help will be close at hand, though if I am able to go I dont intend to this time, moreso knowing what to do this time round. Gee the more I talk about it the keener I am getting to go, and thinking in my head, its not like I need permission or time off since I am the boss https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ , and the kids I dont think I would need to twist their arm in having a day off, hmm very much closer now. One thing is what are the facilities like, or would we be in remote area, ie Im talking things like showers/toilets and the like, thanks again,

What you're talkin' 'bout?????
You have lockers everywhere, a potent vehicle, good driving style, lots of friends to help out (if we don't need to be helped!), and it's just for one weekend  .
If you were to be on the sand for months on end, maybe a problem and i'll agree with you, but this is only a weekend!!!!!
You can still look after your vehicle on the sand, no roostertails, no wave bashing, etc etc.
Bottom line is i would love you to reconsider

Stevo68, i have just been for a drive and popped into the "new" Anaconda shop in Nerang road.WOW!!!! What a nice shop, has everything you could need for a camping trip. (except maybe beer and your personal squeeze  )
They have all sorts of kayaks, fishing eq, 4x4 recovery stuff, fridges (engel & waeco), gps (navman, garmin & magellan) , bicycles, hiking, mountaineering, tents, etc etc etc.
So to cut a long story short, if you want any guidance or input, phone me and i'll gladly spend a sat morning with you discussing this stuff. I love it and have been camping for 20years, so i can show you a few things and then it's up to you, for what suits you. Make use of my and other forumite's experience, it will save you money and make the experience more pleasant.
As it is you live close to me, so call me on 041 045 0053 if you want and we'll chat.

Firstly what are the chances of 17 vehicles actually turning up 8O people have a tendency to drop out at the last minute... but we can always hope everyone makes it https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

But there is plenty of room from experience on the beach... in behind the dunes provided there are enough of us to push off the backpackers  was thinking in between Eurong and Happy Valley... should be fine... i hope.... please.... numbers will prevail!!! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ 8)

I have found that most camps have between 1 and 5 cars, so 17 may be a bit difficult to squeeze into one area. One main camp and a couple of satellite camps may suit everyone. Some people prefer the space.

I gather most of the GCLRO club guys have UHF comms so gathering the troops will only be a quick call if required.

Captain_Rightfoot

Out of curiosity I called the rangers on Fraser. They said that you wouldn't get spots for all 17 right next to one another beach camping, but if you picked the right area you would be close. He suggested around One Tree Rocks, or south of Dundaburra for a group that big.

He also said that the other option was to book at one of the campgrounds and we should be able to get spots next to each other. For this he suggested central station or Dundaburra. Interestingly, this costs the same as beach camping, the only diff is you have to book. Both campgrounds have facilities. We we were on fraser we stayed at DB and it was really good https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Here is a camping map of fraser.

Seriously its no issue of room..as josh (outlaw) said we can camp behind the dunes. We were there last year with 6 cars and could have had tripple that amount no worries. One group next to ours had about 8 troopies and 30+ people.
Beach is the way to go.
Looking forward to end of March! Fraser is great. It's gonna be one of our best trips this year for sure https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I agree with Camo - last time we went to Fraiser we booked a site at Central Station and when we arrived at 7.30 that night found that it had been over run by backpacker who had set up camp for the night. So we then had to Drive 1.5hrs IN THE DARK back to happy valley where we new there was camping available on the beach.

For a big group you will find it hard to get a campground in a popular area regardles of if you book or not

Beach is the best way to go - an there is nothing better that waking up with the sound of the ocean

You can fill up before you go on the barge, and also you can get petrol at 3 or 4 places on the island... like Eurong and Happy valley (see map I linked earlier). Be warned though... It's EXPENSIVE https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
As to water... depends how clean you want to be https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ I would think you'd want to take at least a 20. You can get more at one of the campgrounds https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Some valid questions being asked for this trip - can I suggest a discussion during our next meeting to include possible equipment requirements and general info on camping on Fraser. This way everyone going knows what they will require to bring and what they can expect.

Maybe we can combine this into the Recovery point, GPS day?

Just a thought, Mick
