I am looking to replace the steering wheel mounted airbag in my wife's D3 (no its not part of the airbag recall) as the covering material has lifted at both the top and bottom with the effects of the sun. It greatly detracts from the rest of the vehicles interior. I was wondering if a D4 steering wheel mounted airbag would do the job. At least I thought that might be the case until I found that the LR part numbers are different.....I am wondering if anyone has had some experience with the airbags........other than them being deployed in an accident that is! Oh and it's worth mentioning that they are expensive little things at around $1200 each. There is a price difference between the D3 and D4 airbag of $1.00.....go figure?

4 minus 3 equals 1. Someone in spare parts has a sense of humor. [bigsmile1]
Don't know whether it would be a safety issue or not but could you get one that hasn't deployed in a wreck?

It might surprise some people but airbags are meant to be replaced every ten years. I’m sure I read that in the Disco workshop manual at one stage?

As do flexible brake lines on quite a few LR models.

6 years on those bad boys. It’s funny really as I’ve only seen this guidance from LR and so far no other manufacturers.

And yet it should be done on every vehicle...

Unquestionably they should be. I’d have said 10 years was a more reasonable figure which is a reasonably balance between never changing and risk.
Mine are now overdue and will be done at the next fluid change which will see them done at 9 years.
As an aside, while this relates to the flexible elements, it’s the steel lines that are wearing out quicker in Europe due to salt corroding the steel lines.

Yes. Very different to over here...
I’ve got a set of braided HEL lines sitting waiting to go on.

You’ll throw the car away before replacing airbags.
11 SRS bags will cost the price of a 15 year old Vehicle.

Original design life is / was 10 years, hence the limit.

Guys thanks for your feedback..........I understand that the airbag itself is still good for a few years yet. My issue is not one of worry about airbag failure, rather it is one of esthetics i.e. the pad on the airbag has lifted (curled up/down) at the top and bottom from the effects of the sun. I have gradually been doing up this vehicles interior and this is the last issue that is really bugging me. Yes, I do know the steering wheel airbag is expensive. I am prepared to replace the airbag but I did not want to use a D3 version as a replacement as every one of those I have seen has the same problem i.e. the pad lifting at the top and bottom, whereas my D4 has not lifted or deteriorated to any visible extent in my 6 and a bit years of ownership. I was looking to purchase a D4 version. My concern is the connecting plug which knowing the way LR does things may just be different. I guess one way to find out is pull out the D4's and have a look! I was just wondering if anyone knew if they were the same and save me a job.....basically lazy I guess!

You can always do the mod and fit a D4 wheel [emoji41]
