Hi all,

I think my brakes are not working as well as they should. I tried them out yesterday with a crash stop, and they weren't great. So I then tried it out back at home, and found I couldn't lock the front wheels from 20 KPH on grass. The back wheels did lock but only just and with a huge step on the pedal.

The power boost does seem to work, in that with my foot on the brake, the pedal goes down when I start the engine.

With the front wheel jacked up, it only takes a light pressure on the pedal to stop me turning the wheel.

The vehicle was sitting for four years before I bought it, and the vendor did say that the pedal had gone a bit soft. The fluid has been changed recently.

Does anyone have any suggestions please? Or is this normal, and I have just become used to the light pedal on my Defender and Discovery?

Thanks,

Paul

There is a reaction disk between the master cylinder and the operating rod from the pedal, if this has deteriorated or is fitted with a soft disk this may be the reason for your lack of brake feel/efficiency. It was a similar for 1970's Holden Kingswoods which used similar PBR parts with a soft reaction disk. There was a brake service in Silverware NSW who had special reaction disks with a greater density which gave the driver a harder pedal and better feel of the brakes.

Thanks Diana, from the blown-up picture in the manual it looks as though that part is internal to the booster?
I am a bit doubtful though if that is the problem - it is not so much the feel of the pedal but that the vehicle really doesn't stop well, even considering the weight of a mortar carrier. It may be normal for a heavy 6x6. I also have a much lighter 6x6 cargo but it is only slightly better. I might just be accustomed to the excellent brakes on my Defender and Disco 4, or maybe both of these have a similar problem.
Cheers,
Paul

no further responses? I have a similar problem with my 95 110 and there is no way on earth I can lock the front wheels under braking even though i have replaced most of the system.

I remember from working on them that they were a pain to bleed and there was rarely a vehicle we could get to lock up in the test area.

I would say it is normal. From memory all 110's and 6x6's were a disc/drum combination (please don't quote me, it's been at least 6 years since I touched one), so would feel significantly different to any 80/90's RR or Disco.

I am still concerned with mine. Apart from anything else, there is no way it would pass the 'G' test for rego. I really would like to know what can be done. My last series 3 stopped fine, as did my S2B but these 6x6's have got me stumped.

Have you had the rears apart by chance?
I also remember there being two bleed screws on the front AP calipers. From memory one had to be done before the other. Should give better pedal feel.
Will have to find and flick through old field notebooks and see what I had written down.
