Hi,

So I am looking for a defender 130 to put a slide on camper on a tray and was thinking I wonder if it would be possible to make a double cab or single cab disco 2 with a ute tray on the back for the camper (see images below for the sort of thing im thinking. It would have more comfort and possibly be cheaper.

Has anyone done something like this?? or go any idea if it is possible/easy to do?

Thanks.

If Landrover had made these available as an off the shelf vehicle when the first D1 was introduced then I Imagine that they would still have a good share of the Mining/Farming Market instead of SFA as they have now.
Even the D2 was streets ahead of any other 4WD when it first came out and a Discovery ute would have been very popular.
I would Love one of these.

I saw a D2 cab chassis at Cooma. Came from Victoria.

It looked great and was a really good conversion, but I think the tray will be too short for any campers to sit on.

You really need a long wheelbase to keep the weight form hanging out the back too much

Crap paintwork or crap cab conversion?
Honestly both [bigwhistle]
The paint looked like that rhino coat stuff crap.
The welding was crap with gap`s all over the conversion and bit`s of plate tacked here and there :rulez:
It was definitely a 10 metre car [bigrolf]

Haha i know the paint work was crap, i did tell him that when he did it, but it is only temporary. I haven't seen it in person since the ute chop.
I thought the cab would have been done ok as it was engineered i believe? Tray etc...i doubt were done well, he is a farmer after all[emoji6]
It will be getting a chassis extension and respray in the future

I was just told the other day a friend of mine has finished his cab / chassis conversion. Not sure if a D1 or a D2. He told me about wanting to do this about 10 years ago. At that time he mentioned the back of a Mazda ute cab was an almost bolt in fit for the back of the chop.

Same lines but not wide enough.

Indeed. There was a thread about it somewhere. It worked, but needed an infill.

That could fairly easily be done.
Next time I see him I will try and get a few more details.

Have you thought about purchasing an army six wheeler? They would have the carrying capacity and some room left over!
