Hi Guys,

I need some assistance from all your combined wealth onknowledge.

The other day I was unfortunate enough to have my D4 ( 3.0TDV6 2016 55,000km ) throw up an engine fault ( yellow engine symbol on dash )and the engine go into limb mode when travelling on a gentle hill up (MaroondahHwy ) 80 km/h 7th gear around 1,400 rpm. I pulled into side road, stopped the engine and checked for oil/fluid leaks - nothing. Restarted engine15 minutes later and still engine fault/limp mode. Called LR assist and RACVman came, connected “orange “ coloured scan tool. No error codes showed up andwhen scan tool disconnected engine fault/limp mode gone. Quickly test drove vehiclearound neighbouring roads and hills while RACV man waited but no fault againand vehicle back to normal. Have been driving vehicle for 10 days now onbitumen roads around town and no more faults.

Any thoughts on what might have happened ? When the “enginefault” symbol occurs and goes into limp mode does this only happen with enginefaults or includes transmission faults ? Is there a separate transmission faultsymbol ? Is there any way to reset from enginefault/limp mode by myself without using a scan tool ? I am now just a bitconcerned this may happen on a 4WD track without notice and I’m going to be stuck.

Any additional info or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. The vehicle has been fault free up to this time. [bighmmm]

Could be quite a few things and without an iiD tool (or similar) you'll be none the wiser. Codes are likely to be held in "Pending" list but not available to a generic code reader and if so would shed light on whether it's air inlet related or something else. Most likely issue is air inlet (hose etc) however, my Restricted Performance fault, which was air inlet related, was a red triangle so not a matching symptom to yours.

Definitely an engine fault rather than gearbox. Some faults will keep showing the fault condition until a specific drive condition occurs that triggers the cancellation of the fault message - eg have to get to a specific speed without the fault re-occurring or be fault-free for a number of engine starts.

I have considered getting an iiD Tool . I think they are around $800 ?????

Unlike the generic scan tool the RACV man had, would the iiD Tool be able to read the "historical" error code of when the engine fault / limp mode previously happened ?

Frustrating thing is the vehicle has been faultless for 2 years and currently drives perfectly but this incident has just left me with a "reliability" and lingering concern it may go into limp mode again while I am actually 4WD up a steep track in a park, and I don't have any way off clearing the fault and getting out of limp mode.

I guess I could book it into a LR dealer and see if they can read the error code from the previous engine fault ( as vehicle under warranty ).

Yes my historical codes could be read by iiD and the dealer system when not displayed in dash at all a few days after event but I don’t know if that would be true for all codes or all types of fault.

The generic tool may have been able to clear all faults even if it couldn't read them so the fault may no longer be retrievable. However with your own tool if limp mode re-occurs then you will at least be able to record the fault for later assessment even if the fault code is meaningless to you, then clear it and keep going.

I had an occasion to contact my dealer with retrieved fault codes which then enabled me to fix the fault myself rather than have the D4 trucked to the nearest dealer 200 kms away.

...

FYI, in November 2017 I paid AS$639.74 (£355 pounds) for the GAP IID BT delivered from the UK.

Thanks Graeme, Scott and iannicki for all the info.

It looks like the GAP IID BT tool maybe a worth while investment - especially if I'm going to keep the vehicle for a few more years.

I just emailed Island 4 x 4 for an up dated shipping price.

I just did a silly thing and actually read the manual where it states a solid amber engine symbol could be an emission problem. Doesn't sound right to me ?

ENGINE/TRANSMISSION (AMBER)
Illuminates briefly, as a bulb check,
when the ignition is switched on. If
the lamp illuminates when the
engine is running, there is an
emissions-related fault with the
engine or transmission. The vehicle
can be driven, but may enter
Limp-home mode with the
possibility of reduced performance.
Seek qualified assistance as soon as
possible.
If the warning lamp flashes while the engine is
running, reduce speed and seek qualified
assistance urgently.

Thanks Bobc163 but had already order a IID BT Tool from Island 4 x 4 .Should arrive in a couple of days.

Hopefully if I have any more trouble with engine faults / limp mode I can clear myself and get back on the road.

Frustrating thing is the vehicle and engine drive perfectly now, just concerned it will go into limp mode again for know apparent reason.

Once gain thanks guys for your help and advice on this.
