Hi everyone,
I have a 1976 Series 3 Safari wagon. I've only had it for a couple of weeks, so am in the process of assessing its condition.
One major issue is that I can't select 1st or 2nd gear at all, either with the engine running or not. I can select and drive in reverse, 3rd and 4th. The clutch seems to have good travel. Any ideas please?
Thanks,
MalBar

Hi,
Drain gearbox oil and see if any bits come out.

2nd link has a good pic that explains what moves for 1st and 2nd. May have to remove tunnel cover and have a look to see whats stopping the movement of selector shaft.

it sounds like the syncho clips have destroyed themselves and the selector is now jammed. Continuing to drive the car may grind the bits of clips into other gears or ruin the shaft.
If your gearbox was in really good condition with no noise before this occurred it could be a cheap fix.
If your gearbox was noisy it will add to the bill.

Couple of pic to help you understand the inside bits.
Two brass rings, 3rd/4th syncro. They have 3 small sprung clips, to hold inner gear, central.
Straight cut gear on same shaft, 1st/2nd syncro. These have 3 smaller clip, 3 springs and 3 ball bearings holding the inner gear central
