I haven't had a problem with my harmonic balancer (touch wood) But if I did I would be looking at a genuine LR replacement for it.

I believe the LR ones are not the original I have the Ross Balancers prototype on my truck and it has been faultless for 2 maybe 3 years and 100,000 km

The Td5 HB is obsolete from Land Rover, so aftermarket or secondhand are the only options.

I replaced the one on my D2 recently with a Powerbond from Precision International initially intended as a maintenance item but was just starting to make a noise at 250K km, and would you believe last week the RRC one went, with under 200K km. First one cost about $340, and the current price is $383.06. My understanding is that they can last a lot longer, but not for me.
DazzaTD5 says he's had no problems with them to date.

As noted, there is no genuine ones now.
Powerbond ones seem to last ok
Also Bearmach make them, have used a few and again seem to last ok

Never had an issue using dayco

Neither have we sold heaps Dayco power bond, but had 1 fail after 2000kms the other day. It gave way in the centre metal bits, they would slip there. The rubber was still intact. Must have been unlucky with it.

Mine let go in a big way couple of years ago, I have a thread somewhere?.

after lots of research and not wanting to have another disinter grate ( mine cracked throu the metal fingers) I went with the Ross as it is supposed to be the best and alleviate all the previous issues.

no complaints so far all good, ring around on pricing as it will vary.

Good luck with it.

cheers Chris

+1 for the Ross balancer.

I had to make up a special bar to lock it up to tension the main bolt. The Ross balancer has a slightly different bolt pattern compared to the factory one. Apart from the install, it has been flawless and it looks better built than the original.

Hi All,
About 18 months ago I replaced a failing HB in my old 2001 TD5 D2 with one sourced from Turner Engineering in the UK. (Land Rover Engine Parts - Cylinder heads, camshafts, pistons, bearings (http://www.turnerengineering.co.uk)).
They had HB, bolt and oil seal. Sent to me in 3 days - yes freight was $140 odd via DHL. IIRC all up was $460 ish
Installed OK and no more rattles.
Cheers

I often wonder if the engine design engineers ever test a solid pulley on a new engine for vibration or just throw on a harmonic balancer on because that's what was done for years.

I don't know why i think these things I have just done the Falcon at 220,000ks and the D2 was around 240,000ks that's not bad service I suppose.

It is still hit and miss how long the standard oem fitted ones last as well [bighmmm]
Some get a good run others don`t [bigwhistle]
Mine is still the original at 290 k`s and no noise or movement [thumbsupbig]

Landrover oil leaks could play a part in some of the shorter life spans, luckily they are up the front of the motor if they were down the back you would be replacing them every 6 months. [bigsmile1]
