I have just come into a Qmac-90 HF radio in a carry pack.
It has a tuning unit and a multisection whip with it.
I'd like to look at using it with a tapped whip but the connector on the tuning unit is unlike anything I've seen - it's really just to screw the existing whip into.
The tuning unit plugs into the back of the radio via a bnc plug - would this be where I would plug in the tapped whip?
The size of this unit really amazes me, so I'm keen to try it out.

I'm a real rookie on these things, but do you need the tuning unit if using a tapped whip aerial? I have a QMac90 too and use it with a Terlin Outbacker tapped whip without a tuner.

Maybe someone can eduate me on the added value of the tuner ... but I don't want to take over the thread!

No worries about thread drift - it is all learning!
I'm guessing that if the tapped whip goes into the back of the radio, the tuning unit is redundant. It's more for emergencies, or no tapped whip available - at least that is what I think is correct.
