View Full Version : Tool Rolls etc - tool storage when travelling?

Hey guys, was recently thinking of some better storage for my gear for space optimisation (with 4 kids I dont have much spare space when away camping). One thing that I've looked at is my big old tool box. I reckon I can free up some space by ditching it and going to a couple of tool rolls or bags. Anyone use anything like this that you'd recomend? I'll be carrying the basic handtools and a 1/2 drive socket set normally so it needs to be a decent size and not some little **** ant roll that can only hold a couple of spanners. I'm going to seperate the spares into another bag I think.

I use cheap tool bags from Bunnings - they have several to choose from. The soft tool bags are nice for transporting in a vehicle - they don't damage anything inside the car.

One of my friends purchased one of these the other day - it looks so good that I'll probably get one:

My tool roll started splitting so I bought a $10 soft bag from Bunnings, put the roll and some other bits in it, and stowed it in my rear drawers, out of sight. Much better than having a bulky box banging around taking up space. So yes, it's a good idea, I think.

I have 3x soft tool bags that I keep on the floor behind the front seats of my D2a (I have removed all the rear seating).
One bag has all the electrical odds and sods and various electrical tools, Another bag has all my hand tools in it and the last bag holds my big "Thumper" air compressor along with various air tools.
The bags are great as they are big enough to store plenty of tools in and yet light enough to pull out of the truck if needed.

Same as others, but I use over shoulder bags from disposals. They are very cheap and last ages.Keep the socket set separate. With separate bags they can fit in different places amongst your gear.
Also help with security,if the thieves drop in not much chance they will find all the smaller bags. With one big tool box it will be the first thing they grab and you will loose the lot.

I’m a big fan of the tool roll and have a couple of them. I prefer them to a bag as it enables you to lay it flat and see all your tools and keep track of them - particularly handy in a service park.

In the back of the Defender I have a relatively small one, which is an early version of the Michelle’s Sacs one:

Tool and Cutlery Roll | Heavy Duty Canvas MSA 4X4 Accessories (https://msa4x4.com.au/catalogue/bags-organisers/tool-and-cutlery-roll/)

I think mine would be the same as the small one, but they make a large one as well:

Large Tool Roll | Heavy Duty Canvas | MSA 4X4 Accessories (https://msa4x4.com.au/catalogue/bags-organisers/large-tool-roll/)

I don’t carry a lot of tools so I like this one as it doesn’t take up much space.

When I need to carry a lot of tools, this is my go to roll:

Rally Tool Roll - Garys Motorsport Tyres (http://www.garysmotorsporttyres.com.au/motorsport-equipment/race-rally-hardware/rally-tool-roll)

It’s big, holds heaps, has a couple of zipped pockets and comes in a carry bag so stuff doesn’t fall out. Handy when being chucked in and out of a service vehicle.

Although I don’t have one of his tool rolls, this bloke makes some good stuff. I’ve had a couple of bags made by him and the quality is good:

Canvas Tool Roll - Knife roll - chisel roll (http://canvasthings.com.au/index_009.htm)

Jon

Best thing about tool rolls? They don't bloody rattle. I'd like to get some that are colour coded.

I have got a set of metric open ender/ringies and a set of open ender/ratchet spanners in the same roll and they take up bugger all room and don't "rattle" [thumbsupbig]

I have a MSA tool roll , and must say its a great bit of gear. Holds 2 spanners in each size from 6mm -32mm , also plyers, vice grips, a select few screw drivers , allen keys, and a set of torx keys , plus some punches and small screw drivers in the pocket. I lay a couple of pry bars and a set of sockets and extensions on the end and roll them up into the centre. The thing is well made and nice fat Velcro straps to keep it closed/

I've put some thought into this subject recently and have organised tools into three main rolls to allow better distribution around the vehicle.
The Atlas 46 Yorktown is the best of them and the other two I already had.

Atlas46 have other options but this one I think is really useful in the double-sided combination of the pockets for spanners and zipped bags for other tools.

I've also bought a few of these small, cheap canvas bags in different colours on eBay for smaller things less frequently used such as ezy-outs and loose spare bolts/nuts.

Thanks

Yep direct from Atlas46. Shipping is pretty steep but I’m glad I got it.

In my shed, I have a place for everything and everything in it's place, but I don't organise my tools at all for a trip. I bundle everything up into a canvas bag so they don't rattle. When I need to use something I tip them all out onto a small tarp and find what I want. About the only exception to this is that the wheel nut tool is kept with the jack and a small shifter lives in the glove box.

Get rid of the locking nuts and replace them with standard wheel nuts and you can discard the wheel nut tool altogether[thumbsupbig]

I don't have locking nuts. I was talking about the socket tool for changing a wheel, I keep it handy so a flat tyre can be dealt with without unpacking anything else.

OK, I keep my breaker bar and socket separate from my other tools as well [thumbsupbig]
