Squeaky Defender 110 - clutch and wheel?

Hi all,

Hoping to leverage some of your knowledge!

I’ve got a new (to me) 2007 110 puma that has developed, aside from the common clutch squeak, a very high pitched squeak or squeak whilst driving. It is a constant high pitch noise.

It is occurs in all gears above ~30 kmph and stops momentarily when the breaks are applied. Because of this I assume it is something to do with the wheels - it certainly sounds like it is coming from one of the driver side wheels as oppose to the engine bay.

Any ideas?

And whilst I’m writing - any ideas on the squeaky clutch fix? Mechanic reckons a new master cylinder, though I’ve also heard of a grease gun fix.

Wheel squeak;
Could be something as simple as dirt/rock in brake pads, or its a wheel bearing, clean brakes, check for play in wheel bearings.

if you mean pedal squeak;
*Master replacement wont fix it.
*People will give you a million options they swear by (because it worked for them) one or a combination of them, may fix yours.
*There is a write up here somewhere of a complete strip down of the pedal assembly and what was replaced, lubed, fixed etc.

Some of the million options to try:
*Spray lube such as silicone spray up inside pedal.
*fit a grease nipple to pivot shaft and add some grease (done from the engine bay.
*give the pedal a slight bash sideways.

As Dazza said, I've had that in the past and it was dust/grime/stones in the brakes. Sometimes just washing out the brakes can help.

As for the squeaky clutch, ours was loose springs and we ended up having to replace the clutch. The early Puma Defenders had a known weakness in the Ford clutch springs. LR issued an upgraded clutch which costs about $1600. I fitted an AP heavy duty clutch which cost $2600.

I rode the breaks harder than normal on my way home today and it didn’t squeak at all, so maybe I managed to clean out whatever was rubbing. I’ll keep an ear out!

As for the clutch I may start with some WD40 on the pedal shaft and go from there. Hopefully can avoid a whole new assembly - else I’ll just put up with it!

my 2c:

loose brake pads are likely cause behind your high pitch noise whilst driving. I had similar issue with my fronts, fixed by my indie with some brake pad bonding glue.

Clutch paddle squick? remove clutch pedal housing cover in the engine bay lubricate mech liberally :) and done

I would say it rattles slightly when idling - is this a cause for concern?

One day if the springs break you might have a problem.

If OP means pedal squeak, as in when they press the clutch pedal it does the age old Defender pedal squeak or creak, then try the million and one different lube options or as most Defender owners do...... live with it.

As the OP didnt say "rattle" on idle, as this would point to clutch assembly (springs in driven plate, oh so typical on 2007 onwards).

Thanks Dazza. To confirm, I was referring to pedal squeak. This has been present in most of the defenders I’ve driven, and doesn’t bother me too much!

I liked the comment about loud radios.. though the creaks rattles and squeaks can be quite comforting.
