help - vibration problems on Rangie

I first noticed a vibration problem at more than 70km/h last week. After checking everything I found that the nut holding the A-frame onto the diff was loose. I tightened it all up expecting that to fix the problem.

I have been away all week and only got a chance to drive it again this arvo. There is still a vibration. The only thing I changed before vibration occured was the rear trailing arm bushed. They had neoprene and I changed to rubber.
When I went to grease the uni's I found that the rear rear uni had lost its nipple and all the grease was gone. I thought a bad uni might account for the vibration but I just pulled the rear tailshaft and the uni's seem ok.
When I remoed the rear tailshaft a bit of oil dribbled out at the back diff, is this normal? I assume the rear seal is leaking a bit.

I ahve check tyre pressure. Any other ideas? I am meant to be leading tomorrow on a trip

Er I would change the uni and see if the vibration is gone.
Oil from the diff is not normal, pinion seal.
The loose nut will give a clunk on take off but not usually a vibration.
Maybe your ball joint is also stuffed. check it for movement with a tyre lever or big screwdriver.( this will not usually cause a vibration)
Guess- maybe you put the rubber bushes in incorrectly, although I do not know how. Its always best to go back to what you did immediately prior to the problem starting. Flange goes to back of chassis mount if I recall. Look in the manual.

G'day Walker,

It may not be related at all.... but I had a vibration that started between 70 and 80km/h... looked for sometime - before I realised that there was a large clump of dry mud stuck on the inside of one of my rims ( it was stuck like cement). :oops: :oops:


Cleaned it it off... no more vibration. It could be something simple like that.

Just a thought...

Adam I would stick a set of road tyres on yr rangie before u start pulling it apart...... simex tyres tend to vibrate at the best of times they develop flat spots when they have been sitting for ages......

I have a set f 33" bridgestones in my garage laying around if you want to do some testing pm me

I get paranoid when I have been driving around on my simex too long and when I put the roadies back on all the vibrations are gone. apart from that check for mud in side the rims as Bytemrk said
trailing arm bushes wont vibrate they will just rear steer... only other thing that i could be is a tail shaft that has been landed on and bent out of shape a few mm will also do it.

You didn't pull the shaft completly apart at the slip joint and change the phase of the unis?

-No I didn't change the phase on the tailshaft
-I had high pressure washed the car last week and did not notice any lumps
- When I wrote this question I already had a couple of uni's planning to change them. I changed them this arvo and it seems that the vibration is gone so an easy fix.

The uni did seem like the logical problem but there did not seem to be any play in them. Even when I pulled the tailshaft out I still did not find any lateral play in the uni. I would have thought with the vibration as bad as it was (very bad) that the uni would have been almost falling apart??

High pressure wash 8O ! , that may be it.
If your rims were balanced with dried mud and stuff on them the last time
and then you blow it off down the track with water it will upset this balance.

good that you found the problem wouldnt want you pulling out of yr own trip next week!!

Ended up getting a 2.5" exhaust and cheapie straight thru muffler. I already had extractors on it. I did want a 3" but the exhaust place thought that would be too big.

2.5 is heaps for a v8

350 is about right i have paid about that for a 1/2 and exhuast system with out any mufflers

Not bad value. I paid about $275 a few years back for a 2 1/2 inch with a extra resonator at the back on Aquarangie, about $245 for a 2/14 with a sports muffler (not straight through) about 18 months ago on the old 83 Rangie.

Maybe QLD prices are cheeaper, dunno :?:
