Byron Bay Railroad Company.

This is one setup I have to see.

Wonder if I should have stared a thread on this train in the Alternate Energy section as well[wink11]

Doesn't matter where the thread is put, some drunken yob will think it hilariously funny to "roll coal" at anything involving solar power. :bat:

Germany launches world's first hydrogen-powered train | Environment | The Guardian (https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/sep/17/germany-launches-worlds-first-hydrogen-powered-train)

While not actually solar powered as yet it these trains could be, as hydrogen can be made using solar power.

Creative advertising.
Electric motor and batteries. Not solar powered as such.
Yes they use solar to charge the batteries back at the station.
Bit of a difference.

Not at all - the POWER for the train is coming from the solar panels - the batteries on the train STORE that power, hence Solar POWERED Train - makes perfect sense to me as an Electrician. A BATTERY powered train had some D cells in it and runs around a small track in your childs bedroom. 😉😊

Hi timax and as Homestar posted, the train draws it’s energy from battery banks on the train, but these battery banks are recharged by the solar panels on the roof of the train and the solar panels on the roof of the train’s storage building.

If you scroll down through their Facebook page, you will come to one of their power “BILLS”, where they made a CREDIT of $698.14 for a months “USE”

Yep i know what your saying but thats like saying a Tesla is a solar car if you have a solar panel on your roof at home where this really is just an electric train which we already have. Instead of overhead wires its battery or diesel powered with the sun charging the battery or the grid when there is not enough sun.
If the electricity was made from a wave generator would it then be a wave powered train? Or from a wind generator is it then a wind powered train?
Hey, im a hard one to impress i know.
I look at the project as more of a way for the resort to run a shuttle into town and pretend they are doing something for the environment rather than a ground breaking achievement .

Yep, spot on. [emoji106]

You realise the train does have solar panels as well as those on the station?

And in lieu of all of that - what would you call it that would make it more accurate in your mind?

Id call it a hybrid as it has both electric and diesel engines.
I have seen it run without its diesel but im led to believe it uses it more than just the once a week backup check.
Not sure if you know the track but is basically a straight and level 3 k stretch. The train gets just enough of a push from the motor so that they can then shut the power off and coast most of the way. It takes 10 min to do just 3ks.
Is that impressive? Im sure to many it is and as i said im a hard one to please and definitely a sceptic of many things. Probably too many things.[bighmmm]
Would be great if it actually went somewhere and was useful to commute on but to me its just a coal miner trying to look like he actually cares for the environment while building a mega resort that the locals didnt want. The train was to be a diesel at first with the option to one day be electric ...sorry solar ,but the resort faced opposition so fast tracked the idea.
I havnt been up to Byron for several months so i havnt seen how it is going but did read this...The novelty has worn off Byron's 'solar' train – Echonetdaily (https://www.echo.net.au/2018/05/novelty-worn-off-byrons-solar-train/)

Oh , buy the way my defender has a solar panel also.
We might need to agree to disagree on this one and thats totally fine with me.
