A mate of mine in NSW just called up,he can't get 5th gear in his Defender.He can get all four lower gears plus reverse but no 5th,has pulled the selector off and can't find any obvious issue's,any idea's?. Pat

As in there feels like an obstruction? the gear lever feels lame? gears grinding when attempting? can it be selected when stationary?

in addition to the other contributions, as you engage 5th the reverse gear inhibitor slides in place (drops out when you select neutral) if this is broken you would not be able to select 5th. But, just guessing without more information.
