View Full Version : Parking Brake Latching Failure

On my way from Darwin to Cairns after a quick roadside stop, I have fault code C1A53-68(2), which is Electronic parking brake latching failure, emergency release has been activated - Algorithm based failure. IID Tool won’t clear it, Townsville dealer Scan tool won’t clear it even after emergency release reset procedure, so i’m stuck with a flashing park brake indicator and fault, even a hard reset won’t clear, until I get back to Darwin and get it fixed. Probably another cable or clip they didn’t refit properly after a body off job!
Should i I manually activate the emergency release anyway so it is at least mechanically released, just in case the algorithm fault causes it to come on whilst travelling along the highway at speed?
Very good service received from Tony Ireland Landrover in Townsville too by the way.

You could try applying the park brake which is the procedure to re-connect after an emergency release. However it might be safer not to touch the switch in case the module jams unless the suspension has lowered due to the ABS-reported fault.

Yeah cheers Graeme. Dealer tried that procedure and I have a few times, pull up twice and hold for 20, but no go. Nothing else wrong with the vehicle and park brake actually engages when the held up for 2 seconds, but releases again. When I shut her down, you can hear the brake motor cycling a few times before a final loudish clunk when it releases.

Perhaps 1 side cable isn't tightening, triggering the plausibility error.

Just to close this out. EPB Module is faulty and being replaced; when it gets here in 7 to 10 days. Nothing else wrong apparently.

So what will the replacement be costing you? Mine was done under warranty. Also a MY14 but still in warranty at the time.

Also under warranty Mike. Due to a big issue at one week of age, LRA gifted me the extra two years as a confidence booster.

I had my module replaced under warranty along with the brake drums. What a crap thing it is. I never use the drive through thing and it still craps itself. The next time this bloody awful piece of garbage design gives me a problem I'm buying a Tojo....... but of course they also have their problems but at least in remote towns they'll fix them.

Mine original and 12 years later works a charm but adjustment and a clean out if heavy off-roading key.
As I design it never slips or allows the car to move an inch.

I think there's more than just a few of us wished ours was as good.

Same. Annual religious cleaning and adjustment and it’s never been an issue. I can be sure that anyone who’s had a failure cannot attest to them doing annual maintenance. Taking it to a deal IS NOT THE SAME. They don’t do it. If they do, it’s a unicorn dealer. It really is an annual task to clean out the drums and adjust clearance.

Agree re the clean out..which is no difference to other drum based designs which if not maintained will cause probs eg VL Commodore. 😐. Drums on a zook will actually jam up on braking if not cleaned out
...happened to the daughter recently. So maintenance should avoid most probs even tho it is a PIA somewhat unecessary design/feature IMHO.

I thought avoiding the dealer for servicing fixed all problems ........

Being pedantic, I checked my vehicle after every dealer service - and picked up several times where the tech hadn't bothered to adjust the EPB.
Made them sort that, and went on my way. After every dirty run it gets flushed out (hubs) and then checked.
9 years and zero problems.
A friend had his fail after 6 years - turned out the dealer had never made an adjustment [bigsad]
Keep it serviced as it should be and its highly unlikely to have a problem.

And to think that if LR dealers actually did some of this work, their reliability statistics would be much higher!!!

Apart from any warranty work like the failed EPB I never go back to the dealer for anything except parts as they do a good price on them. Reason for my distrust is when they supposedly serviced my Td5 Defender and after checking it over I found none of the diff/g/box plugs had been removed to check the oil levels.
Now LR have made it even harder to check their work as there's not even a dipstick to see if the oil is clean......
