View Full Version : Driveline slack, why and how to reduce

There has been a lot of discussion on this and yes a lot of reasons appear, design (lack of), flanges/axles, transfer case, driveshaft angles etc.
What is the real root cause of this sloppiness and what are if any, engineering solutions to reduce or eliminate this?
Will be nice to summarise this here on this forum.

Apart from drive flanges (easy to fix as they're external) there are three diffs that wear. Replace front and rear diff centres and of course the centre diff may need shims or is best replaced with an Ashcroft ATB. On some early vehicles there is gearbox output shaft spline wear due to poor lubrication, easily fixed with the right bits from Ashcroft.
Did I say "Ashcroft"? Yes, they make all the bits needed to address drive line slack.

its only an issue on LandRovers / LandRover products
I dont know diddly squat about modern RangeRovers but  RRC  eliminated the Drive flange Slop  as their half shafts / flange are a one piece forging  but they introduced a whole new world of backlash with their centre diff  and movement in the RA / TA rubbers. 
Ive had a bucket load of Toyotas and they don't have the issue , neither does the Iveco once you fixed the transfer case mounts.
Interestingly my 1973  Series 3  with 86,000 genuine miles  has no noticable driveline slop, and as far as I can tell the driveline is still all as per factory  ( apart from my Electric Motor conversion)
