Got a 120 lt Long Ranger in my V8 D1. Great for being a bit more flexible on when you have to refuel to take advantage of fuel pricing but it does add about 50Kg to the bum. (extra fuel and tank weight).

250l of fuel tanks. what petrol station?

So I'm guessing, managed correctly, they are an asset. ie on a long trip in remote areas they give you the range to find the cheaper fuel, other times you regulate the level to suit your circumstances. I know that sounds obvious, but it is a lot of money to spend. It's like seeing vehicles driving around with maxtracks and hi-lift jacks in the city, is it really necessary.

Cons include tank fractures and I think I saw a chassis issue at one point on here too.

I have 150litres in my D2, bought second hand from Gumtree. Started off as 155 L but has a dent so estimate 150L.
Gives me about 1200Km towing. Plus another 300+ with 2 Jerries on the camper.
It is a Long Ranger main tank with a sub tank in the RH quarter panel.
Funny , But I looove having a long range tank. I have never had any problems with mounts etc.

My first one was in a77RRC . I cleaned up the rust on the seam of the stock tank, then went to a petrol station where it proceeded to **** out fuel . No stock tank was available in Sydney so went for a Long Ranger. Second was in my 91RRC, and I fitted one ASAP after buying the car.

Third is current one. I just like having enough fuel to miss the robbing roadhouses or bypass places with low volume who may have bad fuel. Did the Tanami in my RRC plus 2 jerries on my camper trailer with plenty to spare.
I don't think I have ever hit any of them off road, with a 2 inch lift.

IMHO they are mainly for touring . I don't always fill mine when tooling around town.
Regards Philip A

Has anyone got a brown Davis? They hold 150l compared to 120 or 130l long ranger. I’m in the market so just wondering. I’ve found a 2nd hand long ranger on FB

My V8 D2 has 2 x 40L usable sill tanks, sourced and fitted by Les Richmond. Not cheap, but invaluable.

They fit flush with the bottom of the chassis rails and have presented zero clearance issues.

Better weight distribution than a long ranger hanging from the rear of the car.

Just about doubles range and I suppose if the pump in the main tank crapped out I could route one of the aux pumps to the engine.

An asset for sure.

Do the aux pumps pump to the main tank? I'm guessing that is right. From the little I know about the fuel system, I don't think it would be possible to bypass the main fuel pump. Some one might be able to let us know about that. [ edit] just realised you have a V8, not a TD5. My mistake.

My Defender has a Long Ranger tank, which is excellent and gives about a 1000 km range. Doesn't restrict clearance at all and seems very strong. I have rear airbags anyway, so the extra weight isn't a problem. Its just a fit and forget solution.

I have a Long Range Tank and an Auxiliary tank in my Td5 D2 giving a total of 163 litres and a pretty good range.

If you did enough remote driving the costs of getting the fuel tanks might pay itself off eventually but that wasn't the reason I got mine. The two main reasons I got the long range tank were:

1) Keeps the weight low down instead of having jerry cans on the roof.
2) You don't have to deal with lifting heavy jerry cans up and down off the roof. TBH this was the biggest 'pro' for me - reducing the risk of injuring myself when doing remote travel and having to struggle or end a trip early due to injury was worth the cost. It was a dollar cost v. opportunity cost that swung it.

The only con I have found so far is that if you fill up with dodgy/dirty fuel, you can end up with a lot of it!

That's a good enough reason for me, not getting any younger. As for dirty fuel, I'm not sure if TD5's have the problem of common rail diesels.

Sorry for necro-ing a thread like this but does anyone knows where I can get one of these gauges?

It's the same long ranger and the like fits on their kits. I can't even dream about getting a Long Ranger tank here in brazil because the cost+shipping and tax on top of it all would be eye-bleedingly expensive (talking about a grand total of over 5k dollars), but I KNOW they use quality stuff on their preiferals and I would love to know where to get at least similar parts.

I'm not trying to skimp on buying their product, which is awesome by the way, but It is so prohibitive I'm pretty much forced to fabricate my own auxiliary tank...

Any help would be appreciated

Not sure how off-the-shelf sliders would bolt up.

Tanks hang between and are bolted to the body-mount wings.

Sliders I made up bolt to the same position. 1" box tube runs into those wings, bolts go through box section, through tank-mounting bracket, through wing.

Had heard this somewhere else, understand re the SLS and the pump - can this be re-routed and put in the engine compartment - but why ACE?

Ace distribution block is mounted on the chassis LHS(passengers for RHD) .. plus it associated lines along the chassis.
Lines are all metal due to pressure required.
Air lines can at least be re-routed using flexible hoses as needed .. if they interfere with the sill tanks.

I suppose anything can be modded and re done, its a matter of would you bother, and cost.

Athur thanks for that but as I read it, all the lines - SLS and ACE are therefore on the passenger side of the vehicle and therefore a chassis tank could be put on the drivers side?

yeh got one cheap from WA and am undecided to use on the 300 TDi or TD5 but was thinking the TD5 as an Auto will consume more diesel than the manual 300 TDi so an extra 40 or 50 litres would not go astray

Yeah, from a quick look under my v8(has ACE and SLS) I think the drivers side looks clear of paraphernalia to allow a sill tank.
Only issue then is weight balance, with the added 40kg fuel on the RHS.

One plan I've had in mind for my D1(for a while, no time to seriously look into it .. is maybe a series of ploy piping(say 4") with 180 elbows to make a water tank on the LHS.
If I ever fit a sill tank(or tanks) .. or whatever .. I'd like to balance them out a bit more. Plus the added bonus of a tank of water (you can never have enough water ... also as 'ballast' if needed.
If not needed, let it flow out onto some parched land .. etc. etc.
I reckon could probably fit about 3 lengths of 4" pipe without too much underhang.

Question for sill tank owners users ... do you still fill them from within the car? ... or is there a way to use external filler neck.

Side impact worries me with sill tanks. Sliders would help with this but only if they fit. I like the safety of having a large onboard tank to replace the stock one. Although if you get that one and the quarter tank same issue. The big steel replacement however does not fit vehicles like mine that have the (much better than LR stock) Haymen Reece tow hitch.
