View Full Version : Replacement D4 interior light bulbs
Discotheque

Hi - I bought my terrific 2010 Zermatt Silver D4 late last year after wanting one for a long time. Not disappointed! My first post here so I hope I’m doing it right.
The previous owner had installed some replacement LED bulbs for the cabin downlights however the bulb in the upper tailgate has blown and the front and back seat downlights aren’t particularly bright either.
Would anyone be able to recommend a good place to buy some replacement LED bulbs and if there is an easy how to guide to replace them?
Cheers,
Alex

Dunno about the congrats part.... and I'm not a part of any family [tonguewink][tonguewink]
At one point I had a run on changing over ALL the interior lights (and door lights) to LED on customers vehicles.
There is a lot in a D3 / D4!
You can get normal LED which are white and others that give light that is softer which I found good for the under dash.
Bright white good for MAP lights and doors

Mike, have you replaced the light that shines down onto the centre console at all? I find mine not really bright enough and wondering if it can be upgraded.

Held off replacing mine as I didn't want stark white lighting.

Both these companies offer good quality LED bulbs but not cheap.
I have found eBay to be hit and miss for quality but I think Tombie may be on to good suppliers too.

No. Never even looked.
I like the console area dark when night driving, I already have enough glowing stuff in the cabin. [emoji41]

Jaycar have a good range of compatible LED globes. Replaced all of mine from there including reversing lights.

These are what I used (https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0'mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fulk%2Fitm%2 F182137891476). $12 for a pack of 10 and they have been great so far. In fact, I should by more to replace the even cheaper flickering puddle and foot well lights I previously installed.

Hi Disco
Which brand ones are flickering? Are they a different brand to the ones you have bought? There were a couple of reviews that said they didn’t last.
Thanks
Dave.

Thanks
Dave.Sorry, I wasn't very specific there was I. The flickering ones were 35c each off eBay and were cheap multi SMD globes, that look similar to other Yorkim products. They started flickering within a few weeks. The new ones that I got apparently have a Samsung chip. They haven't missed a beat since October last year.

Thanks, so will the T10 globes fit all the internal lights in the Disco including the footwell and food puddle lamps?

It’s not the chips that cause the flicker.
It’s the poor SM resistors! That or a dry joint.

Won’t be anywhere near as effective in the puddle lights.
Flat panel versions work better as the bulb is horizontal mount.
But yes W5W in all the interior lights.

Would these be ok for the puddle lights?

I have used a flat chip in the rear cargo area. It works fine but its a cooler light than the yorkim globes, which looks a little weird. I do intend to find a better substitute at some point.
Most of those cheap LED globes that I've tried are a blue white. The yorkim globes feel much more natural.

I've used these (2pcs T10 W5W 5730 SMD 9 LED Bulb Canbus Reading Lamp Wedge Side Car Plate Light | eBay (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2pcs-T10-W5W-5730-SMD-9-LED-Bulb-Canbus-Reading-Lamp-Wedge-Side-Car-Plate-Light/302679522770'ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649)) in the rear - good output but they do have a tendency to start flickering after a while. I'm still looking for a better alternative.
This thread has a lot of info on the topic too:

Hey Tombie, I'd love a full set of LED lights if you have access to ones that don't flicker?

Hey guys how did you go getting the front puddle lights to work?
I have swapped mine out with the rear and they work no issues in the back doors but just cannot get the front to work.
Any tip/tricks on getting this to happen.
cheers

The fronts require a minimum power draw (load) or they won’t function. 3w iirc. Flat board style with 6+ emitters work a treat.

Could be. Front doors are MOSFET controlled on the D4.

G'day Disco-tastic - thanks for your posts on this string. Am going to order a pack of 10 of those Yorkim globes you mentioned. Did you manage to find a better option for the rear boot interior light as mine has gone out?
Cheers,
Alex

AlexI have a cheap 6smd chip in the boot light, though i would like to replace it. The yorkims arent bright enough for the boot
Check scotts thread (lrd414) as I think he has a better solution for the rear light, as well as additional lights for the rear hatch.

That explains it for me, I've done the full upgrade with the Yorkim globes, could not get the front puddle lights to work on the T10 less, put the standard filaments back in and all good.
I like the clear white light inside, far better than the yellow glow that is standard.

I don’t mind it too much but I do know what you mean. I’ll have a bit of a poke around to see if I can find a warmer colour temp version.
