I believe the traditional way to remove a 179 head is to hang a keg on a rope pulley over a stout tree branch (count the sheaves to work out the mechanical advantage) , imbibe freely, then use a $5 K-Mart ratchet and a hammer to round off the bolts. Or just find a breaker bar.

You should only need a breaker bar 1/2" drive. If they had been torqued correctly on assembly then they were only pulled up to 75 ft/lbs, nothing major. Of course if they were assembled without thread sealant or anti-seize they may be well corroded in and a rattle gun may be needed.

Thanks Gents - i’ll start off with a breaker bar and see how it goes.

There was a product sold by GM a long while ago called GM head stud sealer. And the reason we sold it was for Holden 6 and Chev V8 head bolts.
If you forget to seal the threads you will probably get a coolant leak.

Ps use the GM stuff in a well ventilated area.

Is that a ratchet you are using the pipe extension on , if so you are lucky you didn't brake the ratchet.:no2:

It's OK, he didn't push his foot against it. [bighmmm]

Oh, you mean "break"? [biggrin]

Anyway, it's an arthritis aid, prevents wrist strain on old fogies. I do it to one of my own ratchets, the one without a plastic handle. It's survived 10 years of occasional pipe use and it's still as smooth as a baby's ... [bawl]
