Without instigating the usual.. My grand dad's next door neighbour swears by camel dung... conversation... I'm interested in real world experience here.
We might be spending 6-8 weeks on an island in the Disco 2.
Our biggest concern is rust in the beloved D2!
It has done many beach trips... but gets a huge washing and cleaning as soon as we return.
It has a few small rusty bits but nothing to worry about.
But with over a month away.... there wont be opportunity for the after beach wash like we do for Straddie Camping trips.
It's a valuable vehicle. Its had a long and well cared for life and we want many more years hence!
So contained in the below list are the usual suspects in the rust prevention.
Fish Oil/fisholene - Old school but gets good reviews and feedback. Stinks and needs regular application.
Lanolin/Lanotec. As above and appears on an even keel with Fishoil.
Transmission fluid and Dust! I'm skeptical.
Tectyl - commercial product that seems to have pretty good reputation. Hard to use and messy though.
Waxoyl - Very popular with English Land Rover restorers.
Right now I'm leaning towards lanolin or Tectyl.
Ian.

Tectyl is the go,paint on where you can,yes messy but no pain no gain[biggrin]
Park on nature strip, use disposal overalls...
Then use Tectyl spray can for the hard to get to places.
While away park in freshwater creek and give her a good wash every so often, use 12 volt shower pump to help.
Have a good trip

I have been using "Lanotec" for years on aluminium boats and boat trailers and I find it to be fantastic stuff, I just spray it on and it is also good for battery terminals as well.
The only downside is that all the dust sticks to it.

Have used lemon scented, pressure-pack lanolin on vehicle underbodies for protection against salted winter roads.
Messy to apply. Easy to see and maintain coverage though.
Sand will stick to it but degreaser should sort that out post-trip.
Might be problematic when applying to keep it off certain areas though (shock pistons, brakes etc) ?

Ever thought of electronic rust protection this option is more expensive but once on is set and forget uses bugger all power and if you sell your car take it off and use o next car works out cheaper in the long run.

I have found electronic rust protection works very well

Fraser.
I thought the electronic only worked on brand new vehicles.

I have always thought it was a scam and didn't do anything other than reduce the bank a/c of the purchaser.

I thought the ACCC in Australia banned them as not effective, because it needs an Earth path (tyres stop this) and a path for the electrons to flow (immersed in water)? Then again, if you are going to be in a constantly wet, salty environment it might be just the ticket!

I put them in the same basket as hiclone's, shoo-roo's and Peter Brock's Energy Polarizer.

Why not go to the bloke on Tewantin North Shore near the pub who will spray the underside with soluble oil if you want and repeat at the end of the trip.
BUT be aware that the oil goes everywhere. My friend who paid extra for the oil had to spend quite a time getting it off the windscreen.
Regards Philip A
Anyway if you keep high on the damp sand and use your indicators to prevent being forced into the salt water , it is not such a problem. You can always dunk the car in Ely Creek and wash it occasionally.

Lanolin. And your vehicle is going to be the school run vehicle or the off road beach vehicle. Just do it.

Anyone used both lanolin and tectyl, and can advise which they thought was the better?
Also,is lanolin painted on,or sprayed?
Dumb question i know, but we have always used tectyl, but maybe lanolin is better?
Never had an issue with Tectyl.

It wasn't Peter Brock's Polariser. Another company sold them...a multi level company that marketed other doubtful products. Peter Brock just happened to believe in them.

A product called "Inox" is lanolin based and comes in spray packs or you can use it in a hand squirter, Bloody marvellous stuff [thumbsupbig]

It's a bit of a commitment. Spraying gunk under the Disco. It's not mint under there tho.

Can I ask what your granddad's next door neighbor does with his camel dung - just curious.

There really isn't that much under a D2 that is going to rust up badly in 6-8 weeks unless that is you are planning to park in in the water.
I think you are overthinking this, Just enjoy your holiday and give the truck a good washing down when you get home.
I have spent weeks at a time on fishing trips launching the boat and driving on the beach /coast and my d2a hasn't got any rust in it or under it.

Just make sure you flush the chassis rails thoroughly to get any sand out when you wash it underneath.

Whatever it is, I think he's on to something, as I've never seen a rusted camel.
I had my D3's under-body treated by the Brisbane company that does the tour buses for Fraser Is.

I'm trending this way! It's done a lot of beach work. Up to six or seven days. I stay out of the Salty water.
Still... It's a valuable car (Just put a terrafirma rear bar and new ACE rams in it... getting new BFG AT soon too).
My dad used to squirt WD40 all over his Nissan and boat trailer. Lasted years.... I have been doing that for a long time and Might just stick to it.

Big bottle of Lanolin and a spray bottle sounds the go.
