If anyone here is interested in what is absolutely BRILLIANT Aussie drama, they need to watch this series soon to air on ABC Ch 2 starring the brilliant & talented Aaron Pedersen.
The initial "Mystery Road" film was aired a few years ago, we watched it,...absolutely sensational.
A follow up movie "Goldstone" was released, also starring Pedersen as Aboriginal detective "Jay",......just watched it,....SENSATIONAL.
The follow up series to the original Mystery Road is shortly to debut on the ABC as a 6 part series of Mystery Road.
To gain the full benefit of the upcoming series, I suggest you watch the original Mystery Road, & then Goldstone, to get the full story behind Mystery Road.
Make no mistake, this is Aussie drama at its best,....do not miss "Mystery Road", starring Aaron Pedersen.

Thanks Pickles, I saw about half the Goldstone film on a flight before it was rudely interrupted and I could not remember the name to find it. Now I can.

First episode, like the first series was brilliant.
Where do you reckon it is set and where do you reckon it is filmed? That mountain range looks a lot like the Pentecost Range on the GRR, but I suppose there are other places that look similar.
It sounded to me as if they referred to Dubbo as head office. Would that be right or did I not hear correctly?

Hi,
The odd baobab tree in some shots must be in the Kimberly area some where. There seemed to be a large body of water in the background of some of the town shots, which may be estuarine.
Cheers

I noticed the boababs but wasn't sure how widespread they are.
The shots with the huge river in the background reminded me a bit of places near Derby.

It's filmed around Wyndham and Kununurra. I had to laugh at one point when Jay refers to going into the city, and there's shot of the one main street of Wyndham!
There's also the odd poster for Kingaroy beer and Bourke (something?). I guess they're trying to make it generally outback/up north Oz.
Those particular baobabs (Adansonia sp.) are "boabs" (A. gregorii), common in the area.

Yes, 2nd movie was Goldstone, which came a few years after the original movie "Mystery Road".
The current Ch 2 Mini Series, which is what this thread is about, has just commenced, the first two episodes screening last Sunday, episode 3 next Sunday....You can google for the background if you like.
I notice a few "cynical" comments?.....Not impressed,....tell me more,.....I thought it was brilliant Aussie TV.

The WY number plates are a giveaway for Wyndham Shire. Beautiful part of the country.
I also noticed the Toyo M55F tyres on the 45/47 series in the opening scenes... 🙄 does that make me a rivet counter or trainspotter type???😲

After watching the double episode screening on the first night, I couldn't wait to see the rest of the episodes, so I watched them two at a time in Iview.
Getting through all the episodes in a few days works better for those of us who have trouble remembering the details of the first episode if we have to wait a month to get to the last episode. :)
I have realised that what I earlier called the Pentecost Range is actually the Cockburn Range, but I think the river near there on the Gibb River Road is the Pentecost.

Terrific movie and series.
Well done to the ABC for producing a viewing experience the opposite of the formulaic 'reality' rubbish on the commercial channels.
Somehow missed 'Goldstone', must check it out.

I enjoyed the series but......... Judy Davis was so miscast. That was very poor acting on her behalf and I also thought Aaron Pederson, who I admire, overdid the tough bloke stuff. Mind you, the two young aboriginal girls who played the supporting roles were great.

I previously mentioned that after the original Mystery Road Movie, and before the production of this series there was another movie "Goldstone", which is part of Jay's "story", and it is, like the current series, excellent. Anyone enjoying the current series needs to watch it.
I'm saying this because I've just noticed that "Goldstone" is screening on the ABC, in Melbourne anyway, at 11.00pm Sunday night 1St July, you need to watch it if you're enjoying Mystery Road.
As they say in the media, "check your local guides"!

i'm only referring to mystery road the film. i went and rewatched it last night.
its a slow film, mainly the dialog. probably typical of queenslanders. generally good story, only 1 plot hole. i think it did capture the outback well.
in the real world jay would of been stood down and kicked off the force for his actions and getting a fellow officer killed.

Got back to Oz yesterday and i’m having an iView binge now, since I couldn’t access it in Africa. (Yes I could have used a VPN to get around it but poor bandwidth there killed that).
Up to episode 4 and loving the Kimberly scenery, Wyndham and Kununurra.
Nice that it’s more Australian now than “American Western” of the movies.
cheers

On the subject of SE Qld the ABC Show "Harrow" is filmed in Brisbane and surrounds Harrow (TV series) - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harrow_(TV_series)) it uses the old Brisbane Dental Hospital as the pathologist's base and the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) Playhouse Theatre as the Police HQ and Courthouse. They actually left the Playhouse sign up in one of the shots ln last weeks show, and then removed it later but the glue squiggle can still be seen. Continuity is very important in filming and they take a lot of time and trouble to get it right. I've seen the "Croc Dundee" bar at Movie World and all the stuff is actually glued down on the counter, so that the glasses, bottle tops, etc don't move between takes.
