View Full Version : Bugger. My first break down. Transmission!

Bloody hell. I was driving from Cairns to Townsville for an important Specialists appointment, lost my speedo 30kms out of INGHAM.
Burning oil smell and some juddering of the vehicle under acceleration.
On inspection, red hot transmission, whine when driving and of course, no one who will touch the Defender here.
RACQ called, towing back home hopefully (150km) and who knows how long to repair.
Im literally in the middle of moving house after selling, and supposed to pick up an $130,000 caravan in Sydney in two weeks.
The vehicle couldn’t have died at an worse time.😡
When they die, they do it big time!

Got oil in it?. Pat

No idea. I can’t get under it due to my flash clothing for my specialist appoint, ent and titanium knees.
It was red hot, no obvious major leak.
RACQ are towing it back home 150kms and then to the Landry Centre 9n Cairns tomorrow.
aThey suggest some major bearing failure.
The vehicle was only serviced 2000kms ago, so I would expect the oil level to be fine.

Thanks fellas.
RACQ just carried the vehicle 150 kms home and will on ship the vehicle to Cairns tomorrow morning.
Brilliant service. (Ultimate cover.)
As mentioned, let’s hope it’s not terminal transmission issues, and hopefully not too long an wait for the repair.
I might end up buying an SCV6 Disco 4 as the tow vehicle if too much of an wait.
Justin, I might end up taking you up on the tow service!😉

Red Hot? Metaphor?

I’d be checking the oil level! I bet it’s non-existent...

The just been service bit scares me,the old oil could have been drained out but not refilled. Pat

Maybe if you told the people that you are buying the van off that your truck has broken down and can't pick the van up so the deal is off they may truck the van up for you so that they don't miss out on a $130,000 sale[bigwhistle][biggrin]

Lost speedo? Could be where the oil came out from.
Not sure about that transmission, but I knew a bloke many moons ago blew a Vauxhall gearbox after the speedo drive fell out.
Should see some evidence under the vehicle if that's the case.

I’d say the reply would be...we’ll happy store your van until your tug is repaired or for a small fee we can arrange to have your van delivered.

Either way I reckon Ken, like most is wanting to pick it up, get factory handover than enjoy the new purchase on the way home.

That is the most likely outcome But it wouldn't hurt to try.

I thought the same thing re the speedoneedle sweep.
As mentioned, that would explain the oil loss. I’ve yet to hear from the tech who has my vehicle, but some may remember I was looking at the LS3 or 3.2upgrade.
I’ve thought long and hard, and think I’ll get an 2013 Discovery SDV6 HSE as my tow vehicle.
Just talking with An dealership in Melbourne for an nice, 50,000km unit in stock.
I’ll keep my Defender for non towing tasks.
Hopefully I’ll hear what the issue is soon re the Defender as I’m honestly buggered re not having an vehicle in the middle of my move, van pick up etc.
It’s not cool cruising the streets in an rented National moving van!
More to follow.

Doubt the speedo drive came out , they are a Hall sensor from TD5 onward (no cable) but if it did old would be all over the back of the car.

More like it was not filled up on service.

A bloke took his Iveco 4x4 for service in Brisbane , Drove home to Perth , Engine seized . Iveco put new crate engine under warranty & then no forward motion , Found Gearbox & TC seized too . Now on his second Engine & Gearbox & third TC .
No oil leaks.

Transfer case is the likely suspect... should be a Straightforward diagnosis and repair... i could bring one up with me when i swing by the caravan dealers...😄

What sort of money would you expect Justin?
Also, is there better options available than repair?ie aftermarket transfer cases?
Thanks mate. You will be getting my work once I move to Tassie next month.

And its hard to cost it up exactly but if you are going to go with a reco one then make sure it has the steel intermediate shaft insert and best chuck in an ATB centre diff too😎

Rene, my Tech in Cairns found this:

I was right, no oil in the transfer box and a tooth was hanging on the magnet. This is the 3rd Puma I've seen where the oil "magically" disappears...

He’ll fit an second hand transfer box, and it’s notas dear as I was expecting $2200 plus freight.
oh well, it’s only money.

Why did it disappear?

Tombie

Only 2 ways it can go..

Outwards or into the Gearbox.

Yep,the gearbox will be overfull,if no sign of leakage.

Hopefully mechanic didn’t forget to re-fill. Gearbox leave and oil everywhere under the car would confirm this.

The intermediate axle on a Land Rover 6x6 can go 800km with out oil before it starts letting you know it’s not happy.

Can't go into gearbox. Will just run out on the ground. 100% someone didn't fill it up.
