2008 D3 SE head light

Hi all,
Has anyone had a go at fixing or replacing the high/low beam xeon lamp shutter.
It sometimes stays on high beam. A simple light touch or tap on the front of the headlamp plastic and it would change to low beam.
Only the passenger side.
Is the shutter part of the replacement lamp or something more $$$$

If you can get in the back and carefully apply some WD40 or equivalent to the mechanism it should fix it.

... Also, sit in the car in the garage and cycle the high beam on and off a couple of dozen times to "free up" the works.
You might need to get out once or twice to give it a thump to remind it who's the boss.
I only had to go through this ritual once in 5 years.
Sounds like the blinker fluid got mixed up inside your headlight.[smilebigeye]

Like your humour.
I used to get the wife out to give it a tap, but it's a bit unfair when its raining.

Can you see the mech from the rear. I guess there is some sort of solenoid or coil that pulls or pushes a linkage.
Also is there a risk when spraying, that you might spay the lamp or the inside of the headlight.

I've done the high/low/high/low for a minute, and she only got stuck twice.
Must really burn the retina's out on the oncoming traffic when it sticks on high beam.

I got involved as Whitedisco on page 2 with my solution but the early stuff has great information on how to get in there and remove the bits.

Mine have been fine for 5 years since I fixed them.

Job done.
Nothing wrong with the solenoid or mechanism, but there was the two indents on the shutter stops.
Scraped smooth, re assembled.
Works a treat.

Just read the Disco3 thread and I'm not clear on how the little tabs don't get in the way from day 1.

Sorry for the delay Scott,
The housing is made of a soft elloy, the shutter is stainless steel. when the shutter in actuated, low beam, the shutter is pushed closed and the shutter pushes hard against the alloy. Over time, the alloy gets dented leaving a little indent which leaves a burr half the size of a bees dick. The stainless steel wedges into this little burr and stops the shutter from de energising. scape this little burr smooth and hay presto, hi/low beam works again.
Hope it makes sense.
