View Full Version : Would you tow a camper trailer to The Cape?

I am considering hiring a camper trailer and take it to Cape York. Is this a bad idea? I am concerned with the track conditions more that the tow vehicle, and a little concerned about my ability, but that is why we call it an adventure!

Better taking a Camper trailer than the caravan as mentioned in your other post, as long as it's a reputable build trailer it will do the cape no problems, some camper hire places have their trailers up to the tip 4-6 times a season.

Booking one this late though might be your biggest worry.

Yes, we can still book a camper trailer for the time we want but it is getting late. I was worried about the trailer being a burden rather than a benefit.

I think it depends on the build quality of the trailer.

We took one up to the tip last year and had no problems at all. Went via the telegraph track (bypass Gunshot, although some people did it with a trailer, only to find they had busted their suspension!!!).

The corrugations are the killer as well as some crossings (depending on the time of the year).

Are you travelling with another vehicle?

Yes travelling with 3 or 4 other Discos from RRCQ. It sounds like you did a similar trip to ours. the two campers we can hire are the Trackabout or a campamatic which is bloddy expensive to hire. We have even thoght about purchasing one just for the trip as they seem to hold there value quite well.

Hi Diff,

You wont have any trouble with the Trackabout campers, 3 or 4 of the hire companies that I know of have them backwards and forwards to the Cape all season every year. The would have to be one of the best value campers on the market for the strength and features they provide.

One of the guys I was talking to said all he has to do is clean them, check the brakes and bearings and send them back up to the tip again.

You will not regret taking the trailer, just take plenty of fuel, you will know its there :wink:

If it's a hire trailer, it will go anywhere a hire car can go.

All you need to decide is whether you can afford the excess?

No, just that sometimes it's cheaper to buy and then sell a 2nd hand unit, than to hire one and then be screwed for an excess.

Someone was telling me how they hired a car in NZ & the radio got stolen. They reported it to the hire company and were told to return immediately. The car was replaced with a 2nd one. They also got stung a $4,000 excess twice, once for the stolen radio, and again for having the car replaced. Not to mention the couple of days they lost off their trip. The Hire company didn't care, they were O/Seas visitors and they had their credit card imprint.
