View Full Version : Rear Wheel Carrier for Fender. Choices?

Looking at wheel carrier options to take weight off the rear door.
Obvious choices would be:
1. Graeme Cooper
2. Bearmach
3. Kaymar
Any suggestions, please?
Thanks,
Dave

Howdy xsi (do you own a Pug by any chance?)
I went thru the same about 12 months ago. Here are my thoughts
1. Graeme Cooper: does not open with the door and does not look that great. Also pretty expensive.
2. Kaymar: well made, but does not open with the rear door.
3. Bearmach: opens with the rear door, good price from Karcraft. If fitting to a post '02 will need to re-enforce teh rear door (but not hard).
I went for the Bearmach. Only problem, is that after 12 months of travelling around the country one of the wheel studs broke off. Not a big job to weld back on, but just a pain. Otherwise good.

I have the Graeme Cooper unit and it does open with the door. There are roller tracks that let the tyre carrier open smoothly as the door swings. They are expensive though (about $720).

I am about to purchase the Bearmach after much research. Strong, swings with door and looks the goods. One of those things that once on you will think is part of the car, as accessories should be in my opinion.
Note that you do have to drill the top bracket if you do it yourself.
Only problem is I have seen them advertised for $520, and as much as $750 from suppliers in Perth. In Landrover mags they are about 90 pounds!!!!
I be interested how much Karcraft sell them for?

Hi xis.
I got mine from Rovacraft in WA at a cost of around $650.00. I think it's made by Scorpion in the UK. Very strong and bolts into existing chassis holes at the bottom but a couple of holes need drilling for the top bracket.
Fitted it myself in a couple of hours and it does the job well.
Cheers.

I've had both the Graeme Cooper model (thanks LR Aust) and a Kaymar, and apart from the fact that the Kaymar didn't open with the rear door it was superior in every other way.
The GC unit had to have 2 sets of rollers replaced as they wore out and rattled like crazy and then the powdercoating kept falling off.
Now I don't know if it was never installed properly but it never held open if on an angle like the original door.
The Kaymar on the other hand never once failed or rattled or lost its paint and totally took all the weight off the rear door and quater panel and locked in the open position. My choice by far, cause really how often do open the back door for the latch to become a pest considering the benifits.

I've also had a Graeme Cooper one. Not very good. Nuff said. Swapped to a Kaymar one, (Aussie made too) and it is FAR superior. I fitted a small gas strut to the underside of the arm to assist in keeping it open without having to use the pin. It helped in slowing down the swing action to stop getting pinned between the wheel and the door. It did hurt abit.
The KAymar is very strong, corrugations don't seem to worry it at all, and it doubles as a good ladder to get to the roof rack. Plus added features as work lamp and jack mount etc.
Think global, Shop local.

Nice pic of Jil seqfisho!! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I went for the Karcraft/Bearmach one as I cant see the point of going to something that doesn't open with the door. Strong build, grease nipples , fairly simple to fit and a good price - what more can your ask for?

Thanks Guys for all the useful replies. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I reckon it'll be a tossup between Bearmach and Kaymar.
I tend to agree the Graeme Cooper job isnt the most beautiful bit of kit around. (I guess Omaroo will remember that when I need pulling out of some **** somewhere  )

Er, No -tho my wife wanted one of those little sporty numbers -
I talked her into a Fender instead :!:
BTW: XSI (Softimage) is just the 3D software I use at work - obviously not feeling very inspired when I was registering on the forum :?
Noddy, I noticed you helped GreyLandy with his BearMach wheelcarrier, I guess what you are talking about is the reinforcemnt plate in the photo on Greylandys website.
Cheers Guys

Having the carrier open with the door is important if you carry passengers ( mostly kids ) in the back like me.
I made my own carrier, but I made it a bit light duty and the hinges haven't lasted that well, so a new improved model is on the drawing board https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ .

Yep.
While they reckon the door on the '02 model onwards has better hinges and more internal supports, it also has the central locking motor and wiper in all the wrong places for the bracing kit provided with the carrier.
It is just a matter of getting some external re-enforcing so you did not pull the skin of the door off. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Greylandy's was a pretty schmick job!!! https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Not sure that that's an entirely fair assessment :? Mine's been on the back for 150,000 of the vehicle's 169,000 kilometres - and most of those have been over corrugations throughout the Kimberly and Cape York. It's done pretty well for itself, and with the grease nipples is still nice to operate. The finish is still like new and no powdercoating has fallen off.... as apparently it should. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Would I buy another? Sure. Why not?

No, I mean to fit a gas strut to help the swing arm at the Kaymar wheel carrier to stop closing itself without using the locking pin.

i was talking about the wheel carrier.......hannibal have some really good products.....but i didnt see a mention
of them here for the wheel carrier......
the strut can be taken of a dumped car...or better still.....
have a wander around the wreckers....and find a strut the length you need.....
and also get the little bolts to fit it to your wheel Carrier........

I got the Bearmach carrier two years ago (from Karcraft). it took me a while to reinforce the tail gate and to get everything in place. I found that not all nuts and bolts which were on the inventory list came actually with the carrier. however, that was not an issue. one more thing: I used plumbing rubber washers between the top bracket of the carrier and the car body.
I am very happy with this carrier, never had any issues with it. highly recommended,
cheers, axel
