Hey All,

As I enjoy looking through pics of ya'll's pics/ albums etc plus I'm having one of "those" days, have put together an album (some pics already posted elsewhere) of the D3 at work and play. Anyone who buys one of these and doesnt take it off road is mad, I have become a real landie addict as the pics will attest too  Enjoy

Anyway, how's your wheel and tyre search going for your Beast :?:

I've got Cooper seeing my D3 tomorrow while it is at ARB. I went around it today marking all the cracks. Hope the Sales Rep agrees it isn't acceptable because I don't think it is for tyres that are only 15K old.

I'll let you know tomorrow.

Hi PCH, what’s the speed rating of the Coopers.

Don't worry about the pinstripes, just keep a good thick coat of wax on it and they should polish out.

I wish you wouldn't post pics like that. We're just selling a property and in a few weeks I could probably string together the cash to buy a D3. I won't be because we have other plans for the money, but when I see those pics I start thinking... :?

Hi PCH, with that rating, your vehicle is illegal and don’t believe the bull****e tyre outlets tell you.

In all states, the tyres on a vehicle must not be lower that the manufactures minimum specs. This is both for load and speed rating and “ Q “ is way too low for your vehicle.

The D3 is well and truly capable of doing more than 160 kph.

Depending on the type of rims you are running, the minimum speed rating for a D3 is “ H “ or “ V “

If you are involved in an accident, particularly if it’s a serious one and the police note your tyre ratings, at the time when they are writing their report they probably won’t know there illegal, but by the time it gets to any form of inquiry, even if you did not cause the accident, you will be held responsible because your vehicle is not legally road worthy and as such should not have been on the road in the first place.

I looked in to the legalities of tyres when I was looking for different tyres for the Range Rover and some of the BS I got for tyre outlets was unreal. I might add, I specifically looked at the Coopers.

Cheers.

One more point about tyre ratings.

If you make a clam to your insurance company, again, even if you are not at fault, your insurer or the other parties insurer can refuse to pay any claim because it is your responsibility to keep your vehicle in a road worthy condition.

Drivesafe,

I don't disagree but there aren't any options available out there for a D3. I'd be more worried if the load rating was incorrect. This would be more likely the reason for a tyre failure causing an accident than me doing 100-110kph with a tyre that is rated for 160kph.

I did a search on the Goodeyear MTR tyres used by LR on the G4 D3 and RRS.

255/55R19 255 55 19 Q 111 . Guess what, "Q" rated! So LR don't comply to their own design specifications.

Point is, they come from the factory with “ 112V “ rated tyres so you would have a very expensive argument on your hands if anything happens.

It’s still your choice, I was just giving you a heads up.

Cheers.

I agree with what Drivesafe is saying, not only is it illegal but it is also fair reason for your insurance company to give you the bird and send you packing, even if a tyre failire wasnt the cause of the accident.

On the other hand it could be argued in a court of law that tyre rating is irrelevant because the highest legal speed limitin NSW is 110km/h, so providing the speed rating is higher than this you could argue a pretty good point. Why a tyre is rated for a speed which the car isnt legally allowed to travel is beyond me. Matt

LR have to cater for the European market which travel at much higher speeds than we do and tyre manufactures aren't going to make different specs for the same model of tyre.

Drivesafe, I appreciate your point and it also led me onto checking the Vic Road regulation and even though it is hard to interprete the speed rating is dependant on a combination of GVM, type of vehicle and the top speed of the vehicle.

It is hard to understand. Maybe you can interprete our local regulation.

Quote from the Vic Road Regs

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrpdf/rdsaf...fe/VSI%2026.pdf (http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/vrpdf/rdsafe/VSI%2026.pdf)

"The speed rating of the tyre casing must be at least: ....

for vehicles with GVM 4.5 tonnes or less with four or more wheels, the lesser of:

-140kph for passenger cars with special features for off-road use like 4WD
and
-Vehicle's top speed.

What does this actually mean?

Thanks,

Chris

Actually Ace, tyre load and speed ratings are the responsibility of the Federal Government and as such, has to cater for the potential of having an NSW registered vehicle driving on unrestricted NT roads so the the speed rating is very relevant to all Australian vehicles.

State regs are only a mirror of the fed requirements.

Cheers.

PCH I'm no lawyer but I'd interpret it to require which ever is the lower of 140 km/h or the manufacturer's speed for the vehicle. Since the D3 can do more than 140 it would be 140? Do you think?
