Actually about 3 weeks ago while walking along the beachfront, a very large school of mullet were spread about 100 yards across the front, and about 50 yards out. Right up to the wall. Never seen that before [ probably never been there at the right time]. Mullet jumping as far as you could see. The tailor won't be too far behind.

Mullet are one of the most important parts of the food chain in esturine and costal waters and I am sorry Guys But i cannot get excited about people still hauling tones of these fish out of the water.

Pity it tastes like crapSmoked Mullet (http://amp.myrecipes.com/recipe/smoked-mullet-0) - when I was younger we used to go to little shacks along the Florida coast in the States and have whole, smoked mullet. Many of them have closed as the high rises and condos have gone up, but those that remain still turn what to me was a bony and gross looking creature into a divine dining experience. Try the recipe and experiment. You won't be disappointed.

The rest was left for the tide and seagulls to dispose of!

I occasionally catch large mullet when cast netting for bait and I find the lowly mullet to be excellent table fare.
Filleted fresh with the scales, rib cage and black lining removed and fried in butter they are a very tasty and flaky fish to eat.
I have no problem with a sustained commercial fishery But targeting the breeding/spawning fish doesn't make any sense at all.
