Windows 8 use security

I have been running AVG for several years and have got increasingly sick of the unwanted installation of other programs when it is being updated.

My question is:

Do Windows 8 Defender, and Windows 8 Firewall, provide adequate security for a home PC ?

We're fairly careful about sites that we visit and we delete all dodgy-looking e-mails without opening them.

in windows 8 your better off with something extra

avg is rubbish these day IMHO

it was bought out by avast a while ago

sophos has a free version of home premium which is excellent in my experience.
