View Full Version : Car Electrics/Install Workshop 8th or 9th April

22nd March 2006, 12:02 PM
Currently looking into the idea of having a club workshop for those who either have electronic componants needing fitting to their 4x4's or for people just interested to come and see how things are fitted properly for future applications. Venue and times to be confirmed.
This day is STRICTLY open to paid up GCLRO members only
Drivesafe has very kindly offered to provide his expertise for this day and has made himself available to assist with the fitting of items such as spot lights, battery systems and the like.
Drivesafe WILL NOT be fitting these items for you but simply offering his assistance and expertise so you can fit them yourself on the day and learn for yourself. Sounds systems will not feature during this day as these can be very time consuming and intricate, but CB/UHF etc can be fitted if needed. If you do wish to have items installed on the day, you must bring any tools you have to assist as Drivesafe can only provide so much 8O https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I'm sure we all have questions relating to various parts of the car electrics and this is something that, given enough time, may be covered on the day too.
This day has come about by me being useless when it comes to car electrics and asking Drivesafe tons of questions about how I can fit my spot lights, LED indicator lights, new radio etc
Before I go any further with the content and planning of the day, please post if this is something that would interest you either from a spectator point of view or if you have items that need fitted to your 4x4.
If you are looking for inspiration or think now is a good time to get a dual battery system fitted (I can't think of a better time) then check out the website below for ideas and perhaps this can be incorporaed into the day
http://www.traxide.com.au/
Hope to hear from some of you soon so we can get this one chalked into the diary https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
Seriously though, i want to install a few items and would love to be there!
One question though, do we need to bring all the "hardware" as well??? Items such as fuses, connectors, electrical wire, etc etc? These are things that Drivesafe sells on his site, but will some of it be available for purchase on the day??? I'm talking basic stuff here, obviously spotlights and radio's we'll bring..... :?
Great idea Mick

Hi X, other than the actual item(s) you intend to install, I should have everything else available if needed.
I carry fuses, fuse holders of different types, cable in all sizes and colours, dozens and dozens of terminals in all shapes and sizes, electrical tape, solder, stainless steel nuts bolts and screws for all sorts of jobs and so on.
If you check my web site and can’t find something you think you might need, post it here and I’ll see what I can do. I already have a number of items that I have not put on my web site so ask away and I’ll let you know if I have it, can get it or if you should source it before you come along.
Cheers
PS, if you haven’t got tool I will provide them but if you have tools and can bring them along, it would greatly speed thing along.

8) mick, i think that's a great idea to help those of us that are electro/mechanically challenged, and its great that drivesafe has the time to help. i reckon you can count me in, at the moment the 9th is still clear [and not wanting any unexpected changes].
mostly i am able to sort my own liclic problems- sorta comes with the job, so maybe i can help lighten drivesafe's load on the day.
i think we had a club trip day on the 9th as yet to be named perhaps we've found it!

The more hands the merrier harry.
One idea, we could also make it a BBQ day as well so if the ladies want to come alone.

I'm keen also.....
I have a set of spot lights to install, and would like some help in decifering all the extra wiring and stuff that previous owners have installed.
I do also have an amp and sub woofer to install as well, but if you don't want that sort of thing on the day, I'll just get some advice on how to do it myself.
Cheers

Caveman, at this stage there is no reason for you not to bring the sound gear but it will be something that MIGHT get looked at.

Depending on the date and work I would like to attend and just observe and try and learn something, will give a hand if an extra one is needed.

I suggest we lock this in for the 9th as we're meant to have something on that day anyway and can maybe head out in the arvo to check out a couple tracks in your local area. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Hi Bandit, it depends on what you mean by headlight upgrades.
If it’s a wiring upgrade then I carry everything you need.
If it’s light bulbs then so far the cheapest place on the coast is Burson Auto Parts.
Cheers.

26th March 2006, 11:03 AM
I'll do both so book me in for the day too, what bulbs do you recomend?
drivesafe
26th March 2006, 11:16 AM
Hi again Bandit, if your planning on doing both, then can I recommend you do the wiring upgrade first, as you might find that the improvement in light from that may very well be enough.
If you still want to go further, then I recommend the Philips Crystal Vision globes.

I did this to my last rangie (reall dodgy install) and the difference in lightin was amazing.
Tim - Do you have enough materials for me to do this?

Hey Grimace
Slim chance I may be selling the IPF spots I have on just now but will know when I see Tim. Replacing them with the XS model so I can "get wet", and am thinking about mounting the older ones (18 months old) on my roof rack. Maybe too big so might end up buying 4 smaller ones like Tim has.
Will keep you posted but if I do get rid of them, i'm flexible on price and payment method/time frames

Paid $360 for them at the Gold Coast 4x4 show - loom, white covers, everything you need.........just need to fit the buggers now which is where Tim comes in this Sunday https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I think they retail for $399 normally but I could be wrong. Nice looking unit though and in my car if you want to look tomorrow night.

Well the day seemed to go well.
A set of driving lights installed.
Wiring sorted out on another set of driving light that were already installed.
And X-box came to install some driving lights and we managed to do everything BUT install the lights.
O well, we did manage to have a good gab feast and then three landies headed off the Ormeau ( how unusual )
We had a good time up there too.
But the event of the day has to go to harry and I think it also might require a new contest, to see who can do the best public screw up.
Harry was on his way up to help us, and came up to a traffic hold-up on the freeway.
SO, harry being harry, decides to slip across the verge and take the local road around the hold-up.
Well that was the plan but as harry crossed the verge, HE GOT BOGGED right in front of everybody stuck in the traffic jam.

8) dranged, i saw you heading north as i was going south, tried to call you, but obviously too late. yep i took the exit just after the servo, and bogged it - nice winch pulled me out, i did take a picture to prove i am stupid, was only another 100 yards to the end of the traffic jam! but i enjoyed making a dick of myself, well you have to have a sense of humour when you bog yourself in front of fifty cars on the highway just three car lengths from you.
i had to winch myself out using a tree at about 85 degrees out the right of me, almost full sideways pull - worked a treat.
and i thought you would just drive straight through with your ground clearance.
grimace, when are you changing springs, want a hand?
