Legal Halogen headlights for series Land Rover

Hi All,

I am hoping to be installing wiring in my 2a in a few weeks, and I always had it in mind to upgrade the headlight to Halogen ones. I will install all new wiring and headlight relay.

What's the go with Australian Standard compliance for headlights, and are headlights bought from overseas, i.e. are Paddocks UK ones likely to be compliant and hence legal ?

Perhaps I should go for road worthy with old headlights and then swap to halogens ?

Any advice appreciated.

I thought so. Hella have good ones available off the shelf here. I have 100/135 bulbs in my County.

I don't think Mr Plod would be too happy with those wattages. Well, he wasn't when he told me to remove mine. I stick to 55/60 now.

He can be as unhappy as he wants - as long as the light fittings meet ADR's, are in the correct colour soectrum and they are aimed correctly, there's no legal issue running 100/130's. Sounds like you have all the fun when you get pulled up. 😉

Yes, the old sealed beam comes out and the new insert goes straight in. 3 small screws around the edge of the trim is all, then install the new insert.

For example - Narva 7" H4 Halogen Headlamp Conversion (Single) - 72036 | Sparesbox | Sparesbox (https://www.sparesbox.com.au/part/narva-7-h4-halogen-headlamp-conversion-single-72036?gclid=CjwKCAjwgYPZBRBoEiwA2XeupX4aFGozWYOGa2 PRoHTBWcI5TH-oSdo_7KNHnGWzVgKM8IT9Orjt9RoCXY4QAvD_BwE) - these would go straight into the existing holders.

These look close to original, are ADR compliant and would accept any H4 globe. If you're worried, stick to 55/60 watt globes, but there is no legislation that states maximum wattage.

Because there isn't a direct correlation between wattage & candela/lumen you see a 55W globe advertised as +30%

A quick look at the Narva site shows no globes listed above 70W that meet ADR, they may exist but they may have something like 'off-road use' or 'competition use' only on the box.
Digging a bit further, the higer wattage globes are out there........100/135 listed here but no ADR ! H4 - Products - Narva (http://www.narva.com.au/products/browse/h4)

Edition 2 ADRs cover the S2a. There is no ADR that covers the headlight intensity in Edition 2.

Edition 3, however, does. ADR 13 comes to mind. There are another two ADRs as well. Unfortunately, these applied to the Commodore.

Yeah, but as Mick says, only edition 2 ADR's apply and I can't see anything in those that talks about anything related to this - Lumen outputs came in with ADR 46/00 in 2006 so technically the OP's vehicle doesn't need to comply with those. I guess light output from earlier globes were never considered to be an issue as far as too much light went. 😁
