Gday All,
I know the front arms are a well know issue , but what about the rears, never seem to read much about issue's with them. I had the rear wheels off today to look at the pad thickness and disc's and noticed a small amount of black spongy rubber seeming to have come out the front bush on the lower rear arm. Only seemed noticeable on the passenger side and I had to get at it with a small screwdriver to get a sample of what it was.
Car has only just clocked over 150,000ks but am guessing its the original bush so it is 10 yrs old. no strange noises or anything coming from it but just made me wonder about them.
Cheers Ean

Same wear behaviours as the fronts.
If it has excessive movement they need replacing.

Hi Ean,
I had mine changed out at about 3000K they were absolutely flogged out. The rear upper ones were far worse than the lower with almost no rubber left in the upper bush but I had done alot of offroad work. I have a good friend who specialises in D3/4's and when I rang him and asked about doing them myself he just laughed and strongly recommended that I take it to a work shop and have them do. When I asked him why his reply was an emphatic "it looks like an easy job but the upper ones usually have seized bolts that are a real PITA getting out". He noted that when he was in the UK they often did the upper control arms if they had a body off job. I did as he suggested and was extremely happy that I did as he was right on all accounts. The upper bolts were siezed and had to be cut out and the mechanic was Pi**ed LOL. It took almost an entire day to get the job complete after the had estimated 3-4 hours. Hope this helps mate.
regards
