Upper tailgate latch

My upper tailgate latch isn't latching, tried lubicating with silicon spray, tried adjusting.
After removing the the section off the top tail gate and inserting into the latch, the latch seems to operate but just pulls out again without operating the release button. Any ideas or is it just get a new latch.

Had the same problem, never got around to pulling the old one apart but it seems to be wear on the latch mechanism that simply at some point can no longer keep the tailgate locked. I swapped it for one from my wrecker.
