Common areas for rust on a Series Landy?

Would anyone have a guide / reference / link to information on common rust issues/areas on Series Landies?

Being an RRC owner I'm sure they are probably similar (what could possibly change, except for the amount of rust, right? [biggrin])

But as a general guide, I'm just looking for info on the common areas.

It may be apparent that I will be looking for a 109 ute, or possibly hardtop/station wagon (in that order)

This is part of my investigating the viability of a series body on rrc chassis.

I'm also looking at 110/perentie as an option but cost is prohibitive for the project at this stage. All I 'need' is a body. Not a whole vehicle. (part of the issue is requirement to purchase a complete vehicle as it seems noone has a bodyshell or rolling chassis available at the moment)

Feel free to add comment on the rust areas etc. I have separate topics covering the proposed mods elsewhere, so would appreciate just discussing rust areas on this thread.

In my experience the common areas are:

Rear cross member
Front dumb irons
Mud splash panels
Front footwells
Firewall
Front grill

Basically the steel bits! Lol

These are the areas that I found rust in my 3 series vehicles...

Also door bottoms plus on the Station Wagon the rear passenger doors and rear door.
Plus there is the A,B& 1/2 C pillar panel that rusts.

Because of the way Series land Rovers are built you probably won’t find a ‘bodyshell’ because they are a series of panels bolted together and need the chassis to hold everything rigid.

Chassis, particularly rear crossmember, front dumbirons, otriggers, especially the base of the one that carries the front of the rear springs. Chassis rails, particularly the lower bits, and where anything is attached. Front crossmember round the relay.

Door frames and tops.

Bulkhead, particularly the footwells and the splash panel. Check round door hinge attachments, and the horizontal bit inside below the vents, especially if it has been in the weather without a top.

Radiator support panel, except early Series 1 where it is alloy.

On five door wagons the sill/"B" pillar

Springs often have severe rust between the leaves.

More rarely, bonnet frame, axle housings, steering linkages, in fact most steel bits, especially if it has been used on the beach.

Very rarely the galvanised body cappings, tailgate & bonnet hinges, fuel fillers etc are rusted significantly. This includes the ribs under the tub.

Almost all the rest of the body is alloy and will not rust, although in extreme cases there may be some corrosion.

Mine had gone round australia a few times before I got it 3 years ago. And never cleaned properly as most were
I found a massive build up of sand on top of the fuel tank under the seat which corroded a hole into the tank, and same with the other underseat tank. All the mounts and protective panels were rusted away also.
My whole chassis was full of red sand. Get into with a pressure washer, I was lucky only chassis rust was in rear crossmember.
In between the windscreen and bulkhead can collect water also and rust over time.

Doors frames rust out very common as said.

It all depends on how hard your gonna look when you buy it.
Lift out the seats if you can and open the hatches underneath to get a good view. Lift up floor mats etc
You can get replacement chassis and bulkhead components fairly cheap if your going down that path. There's 2 on gumtree that look promising posted within the week (vic)
