View Full Version : Rear wheel carrier, on factory bumper

Has anyone here got a rear wheel carrier mounted onto the factory bumper?
I've seen a few including the terrafirma one and they seem to bolt through the bumper, surely it's not just into plastic?
The reason I ask is I would like to bolt through our bumper into metal if any is there, to stabilize a rear jerry can holder I'm building.
Cheers James

Something like this, however I have seen one that was bolted considerably further in from the side, probably just above the reflector in the bumperhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180628/8825435b43145f913ca6538a42d31667.jpg

I've a Rijidij RWC and to fit that the plastic bumper comes off and part of the steel bumper underneath cut away and replaced with a bolt on bit which the carrier post engages with and rotates inside of. Of course a hole needs to be cut in the plastic for the post to go through but that's easy enough.
Why not remove the bumper and do much the same the other side?

I would bet interested how you go James as I want to build a motorbike carrier in the future and like your jerrycan holder I think will benefit from an additional stability mount.

the plastic bumper is just a shroud that fits over the steel crossmember. Its not that difficult to take off the plastic bumper to have a look.
But its also why the fitment of the spare wheel carrier is such a bugger of a job. Did mine myself and would never do it again, but I reckon thats partly to do with the design of the carrier, the name of which I'm too traumatised to remember.

I fitted my Rigidij with no problems although it took me longer than it said on the packet.... :)
I can't see a problem with doing something the other side using much the same methods to firmly fix a jerry holder.

Cheers, RoryI've made some progress, looks like it might be a goer without removing the bumper..

You'll definitely need to reinforce those right angles on the RWC to take the weight of a spare wheel but I suspect you've already planned that.
Good luck with the build.

AlanH.Thanks,I obviously haven't finished yet, if u you are talking just the wheel holder that's correct, but I'm mounting a gas bottle partially inside the rim, then hopefully the gas bottle carrier bracket will strengthen that.... Hopefully, maybe I'm getting "too cute" we'll see I guess

Just be wary that whilst the weight may not exceed the tow bar rating - the force imposed by the different positioning certain could.
Keep that in mind as you build.

I have thought of that, realistically the weight is probably barely 120 mm further back than a caravan ball Would be, considering that the ball weight is meant to be under 350 kg, and that the whole frame with the load should be considerably lighter than that...
Figured it should be ok

Wow looks full on! What are you estimating will be your total laden weight?
I cannot see any hinge mechanism. Does that mean you won’t be able to lower your tailgate?

I cannot see any hinge mechanism. Does that mean you won’t be able to lower your tailgate? If you look on the far left there is a stub axle, so it definitely swings, current issues are whether it will need supports when folded out, and how to lock it in place when folded out, the other concern is gvm, however, the whole rear bar is substantially lighter and stronger than I initially thought it would be, but it's really doing my head in, as I'm so fussy,
Everything is triple guessed and analysed, makes it a long job but hopefully it will be just the thing in the end,
I've told my wife we are never moving on from this series of vehicle as I can't do it again,d4 at most...
I might relay an interesting story about my family history later, explains my fussyness, that's my excuse anywayhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180704/a3902f03b450c541c00205784ce1e75b.jpg

That is a lot of weight hanging off that hitch mount without adding a wheel or fuel containers. Are those two brackets for additional mounts ?

Are those two brackets for additional mounts ?Yep, I've drilled down through the plastic bumper after I assessed where the steel frame is underneath ,I then sleeved the holes and tapped the steel underneath with 7/16 bolts, even when everything was only tack welded it was strong enough to take me jumping up and down on it with minimal flex/movement ,I haven't had it back on since I welded it, but should be better again also having gussetted it as well, we will see..
Oodnadatta track this coming week

Only minor OCD observation, any particular reason for using imperial bolts?
Other than that look forward to the end product.

Although the tyres are half metric half imperial and they seem ok,
Have had to have a major rethink on the wheel carrier as I couldn't get it solid enough,
Thanks to my Bil for his assistance with that

I didn't notice the axle so thanks for clarifying and impressive work.
Any pics of it mounted on the car? This is great inspiration!

I know what you mean about inspiration,
I was so inspired I wish I'd bought a professional one when I was still working on it in a panic at 1am this morning, it is SO MUCH work, however it will do exactly what we need without buying a new steel bumper, you can still see all the original tail lights with it on, and when we are finished and pull it off, you would never know it was on, so the car looks exactly like it did from the factory.. Well almost anyway, apart from four vertical bolts through the top of the bumper, which could also be hidden

The catch is too low bit I'll have to fix that later, other than that I think it will do the jobhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180708/92bd6ec282fb4f7aed18783413bd6acf.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180708/509cfc354b199d9e13feac5936fefdf4.jpg

Looks great! I am assuming you have relocated your number plate underneath?
Watching your experience I think I might buy a cheapie and “beef it up” a bit with support pieces similar to yours. I really want an all rounder for bikes, petrol, wood etc.

But it didn't matter in the end, anyway the bar held up really well over 3400 km, some of it on some rough roads, around William creek and
Oodnadatta to Dalhousie and Dalhousie too mt dare for instance, nothing broke but I have a few ideas for some mods to improve it, all in all, pretty pleased..
