View Full Version : Ive sat and read all the threads on tyres...im confused!

Ok, Like the previous Cooper thread I too had ST's which I will not be going back to.

But I also need to get a new set of tyres for my rangie. Size wise I want 235x85x16. Based in Melbourne the RR is a daily driver but I also do a some touring, and go play in the mud with the club.

Reading all the threads is mind boggling and confusing and in the end I couldnt make up my mind. Im thinking I want a set of MT's this time and down the track buys some mongels for play. So many damn choices of tyres BFG Kumho hankook Nankang and yes Cooper's.

Im leaning towards either BFG MT's or Wrangler MTR's, both seem to have thier issues BFG with breaking thier bead seal and something about a fault in the trye? And from what I can remember Aquarangie saying Wranglers not so good in the mud.

Based on where I am and what I want to do, have I missed something or a brand?

Yours Truely
Confused!

I think that's your problem... if you want the best, you need one tyre for each type of condition. For example, muddies for mud, All Terrains for the highway and so on.

You need to choose the best compromise for you. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ I know it can be hard as often the people trying to sell you the car have no personal experience of the tyres they sell https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Exactly! All tyres are a compromise, and which is the best compromise for each driver will be different, as not only does each driver have a different pattern of use, but their priorities vary. For example, one driver may be worried about tyre noise and another couldn't care less, so they end up with different "best" tyres even though their driving is identical.

Yes your right it is a compromise. What is important to me is durability and over all perfomance, noise isnt an issue. I cant be stuffed right now changing rims ie AT to MT and back again.

Ray you have a mate in every business, once we nail what I want I will call.

Maybe I push the vehicle a bit hard, but personally I will never use mud terrain around Melb again.
What with wet and greasy roads, tram tracks and unpredictable drivers, I have had one too many frights, and it takes a lot to frighten me https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
I have now invested in a trolley jack and air rattle gun and can have the muddies on, including spare in a leisurely 25 min.
And I can only blame myself if I run into someone around town.
If you do get true muddies for around town, I suggest you find out thier limitations on a quiet street somewhere first..
Sorry to sound like a schoolteacher

Hi RR5L, there are a few different types of tyres available for your rims.

I was in the position of only having Wranglers, which come with the RR or fitting the Pirelli Scorpions.

I had been through 2 and a half sets of Wranglers, two full sets and two tyres that had to be replaced because they were speared.

The Wranglers gave me about 40k per set and I was just about through the 3rd set at 115,000 on the clock and I had had enough of the noise and the way they would ware unevenly or blister. They did handle well on road.

So I opted for the much more expensive Scorpions.

Not long after I put them on, I came across a thread on Overland, about a VW Towrag that was having all sorts of steering problems and it was put down to the Scorpions. There was also a link to a USA site where people were bitching about the Scorpions on all sorts of vehicles.

One guy with and F250 posted it was like driving down a freeway covered in spaghetti.

I had about 5k on my Scorpions and they seemed great. Quiet as a church mouse and handled well. I couldn’t see what the problem was.

They soon proved to be the most dangerous tyres I have ever come across. They drift some much that you have to keep your eyes on the road at all times otherwise the RR drifts into the next lane or off the edge of the road. At first I thought this was because the RR may have needed a wheel alignment. So far, since putting the Scorpions on, I have had 3 wheel alignments and every time, they tell me the alignment is spot on.

With just over 30k on them, they are near bald and should have been replaced 10k ago but I’ve been stretching them out till some new Michelins became available, which they now have and I have just got to get off my butt and order them in.

Take my word and steer well away from the Scorpions.

I've always been a Goodyear MT/R fan.

They offer a great comprimise on road and are great off-road bar mud which isn't a problem in QLD as it hardly rains anyway and I'm not one for 'playing' in mud. Remember, MT/R stands for 'Maximum Traction/ Resistent sidewall'.

Mty 235/85R16 MT/R's on my 83 Rangie when I sold it, they had about 30K on them with about 50% tread left. I had them on for 2 1/2 years and have now bought another set (smaller size 31x10.5R15's). They are not cheap, but I paid $199 a tyre on special at K-Mart tyre and auto last week https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

They should last about 5 years, since I am lucky to do 5K a year as my rangie is a weekend basher

First off RR5L you have done the right thing by seeking out peoples opinions,,
thats what the site is all about,,
after you've searched and read all you can on tyres then,
"you pays your money and you takes your choice"

Having just done that on cars and tyres all I can say is Good Luck!

and read, search, read some more, search--- https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I can offer some input here, I have covered over 60000klm since I moved here and 1/3 of that would be on mine sites. I have BFG All Terrains and have not had one puncture (touch wood). I will be looking at them for the next set of tyres for the Disco. our workshop use the mud terrains and ont of 4 vehilces I have only seen one puncture. As for performance, well I havent been bogged in the mud (Mines can be great fun in the wet) and on the road I have no dramas https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Your choice will be your choice, just adding my bit https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Most of the top name tyres are OK and some of the lesser name ones are also OK. I think a lot has to do with the best price you can get at the time. That is mainly the reason I bought Cooper STT's this time as they were $50 a tyre cheaper than BFG MT's. Last time BFG MT's were cheaper. They are a much of a muchness, with marginal performance gains in certain applications. The Coopers are wearing well apart from staking one through the tread with a bolt. Their warranty is not worth squat and is only really equivalent to statuatory warranties as implied by the trade practices act anyway. Over the years I have used different tyres or had friends use different tyres and some suit certain cars better than others. I would use any of the following : BFG AT or MT, Cooper STT, Goodyear Wranglers, Pirelli Scorpions, Firestones (do not make the AXT anymore pity, good for 100,000kms) and even quite a few of the lower buget tyres depending on finances. Baja Claws, Centipedes etc would be the ultimate should budgets allow, but won't for most of us.
The most important consideration is availability of replacement tyres Australia wide. Most manufacturers have a wide range of sizes, but many are not accessible easily. Most places I have spoken too do not stock the 235/80 or 85/16's and must be ordered in. Makes it a drama for the fender. 18", 19", 20" and 21" is nothing short of a trial.
Gone are the days of everyone running 31 10R15's.

Opinions on tyres are like A$$holes, everyone has one. And usually delivered by said person confirming the above.
What suits you or someone else won't suit another. Be honest with yourself about what you want the tyre for, then buy the tyre most suited to your needs. At the price to suit your $$.
Cheers.

I wanted an all-round AT which would be fine on sealed roads and could handle a bit of weekend fun and touring and towing our camper. I went for BFG ATs and have no complaints at all. Unfortunately they haven't had much use in the last year as I'm working OS, but before that they were fine.

Only thing I know about Pirelli Scorpions is they're very popular in Europe and got a good rating in 4 x 4 Monthly's last tyre comparison. I got the impression they would be better on road than off.

Really happy with the Goodyear MTRs, have not noticed any problems with them in mud, and we get a bit of that around here. Good all rounder i think.

Well whilst still undecided I priced some of the options in 235x85x16 for 5 off.

Kumho 834 $200
BFG MT $250
Cooper STT $250
Wrangler MTR $279

Quite the difference

For an all purpose tyre you could try Toyo Opats. I use these (this time around) as my road/light off road tyre. I have a set of MTRs for harder stuff. So far the tyres have been excellent.
The price is very good. try a Tyrepower outlet.
For the record I have used Pirrelli Scorpians, both the old and new design. The old ones were great, I would not recomend the newer design to anyone.
Just my 2 cents worth.
