View Full Version : Diff Breathers - Where to they terminate under the bonnet?

Hi all,

I found the centre and rear diff breathers laying down under my 2003 Td5 Disco Auto the other day. I'm not sure how long they've been like this - hopefully not too long.

Anyway, I've pushed them back up into the engine bay and I can't seem to find where they should be terminating or what they should be attached too.

Can anyone send me a quick photo of where they're meant to be? Haynes isn't too helpful with this one and I'm not finding any helpful images on Google either.

TIA!

Pretty sure they reach up and fit horizontally and sideways into clips near the top of the firewall?

As Gav says ..

Front axle: I think up near the ABS pump, at the firewall. on mine('00) along the firewall clipped along the same lines as the brake lines.
Rear axle: up into the LH wheel arch area.

The front one does that (on the passenger side) but these other two come up on the driver side and I can't see what they're supposed to attach to.

Auto?
I think the auto box has a convoluted one that does similarly.
Maybe transfer box too.

If they have a loop at the top and are at rear drivers side of engine, they are the gearbox and transfer case breathers. clip them over the heater hoses where they enter the firewall.

Thanks for the info. That's more or less where I've got them now so I'll just get busy with the cable ties tomorrow.

The rear diff one should go up behind the LH tailight.
That is where mine is and I am sure the PO was not savvy enough to change the position of it. It loops forward from the axle then up and back.

The two lines come from around the transfer case area (so I'm guessing one is for the auto box and one is for the transfer case) and have the looped ends. They reach to about the location described by Nanna Truck so I'm just going to secure them there.

This may help. From www.discovery2.co.uk (http://www.discovery2.co.uk)

Overkill IMHO.
If you get to the level of the current breathers you already have many more serious problems, like the transmission ECU being submerged and probably the BCU and probably floating away.

You may have missed the point. The 2nd paragraph in the link preamble explains where the factory breathers are fitted, which is the answer to the question asked. I agree with you, the mod is a bit over the top, but some like to go the extra yard, for whatever reason.
