Have spent the last day or so replacing rusted door hinge screws on the 130 (Td5). Bought a stainless set from 4x4outdoortuning among other cosmetic and preventative maintenance bits and pieces, such as some stainless air vent pins and seat box protectors.

Anyhow - got to the third-last screw removal, some had been tough to move, but all thus far had come out in one piece. Got some movement on the head, and though I'd managed to undo it, but the head and about an inch of screw came out and I realised I'd broken the very rusted screw. Some things in my favour - it's a rear door screw. Not in my favour - it's a B pillar screw into a captive nut, not into the door with a nut I can access. I can see the back of the screw from underneath the car, but can't easily get to it.

Tips for getting it out? I figure I've got two options:
1) Drill it out and try to re-thread the nut. Disadvantage here it that I'm nit sure the captive nut would take the abuse, and I'd have to remove about 3 inches of long screw.
2) Try and get a grip on the rear of the screw with some vicegrips and continue turning it until it exits the nut on the inboard side, under the car. (Edit: in the pic from underneath, you can see the other new black screw and the older corroded and busted screw at under it).

Some pics attached.

Also - removed the corroded windscreen brackets for some black anodised aluminium Britpart ones. Much better. The old ones were beginning to discolour the paint.

I'm not familiar with the 4 door but if you can get some vice grips in like you say i'd go down that road.
You wouldnt have much screw left to get out now.
You could always drill it out fully and put a nut and spring washer on the bolt if you can get in.
Just hang your vice grips on the nut and use the inside of the frame as your other hand.
I've had a crack at the series 3 hinge screws so I feel your pain good luck!

Id drill the head of the screw so you can remove the the hinge [bighmmm]
Then soak the hinge side in penetrating stuff for a while [wink11].

Then use some vice grips backwards and forth a bit at a time on what is left of the bolt [thumbsupbig]
Even a bit of heat on the bolt will help[smilebigeye]

On my 4 door it is normal nuts easily accessible from the other side of the B pillar. The lower one from underneath. Are you sure you are looking in the right spot?

They are visible in your photos. Just nuts from the back. I’m not sure what someone has done but I just verified in the parts catalog and it should just be bolts and nuts.

Thanks all, I think I'll give the vicegrips a bash first and see how I go. If I can preserve the original nut that would be ideal. Will report back.

Remove the top bolt and take the nut plate out of the vehicle first, obviously. I'm stating the obvious, but it was never mentioned.

Can't believe I hadn't thought of that! Had been overthinking it I guess. Vicegrips didn't fit into the space so didn't get any further with it today anyway.

Cheers! [biggrin]

Update - worked a treat. Took the top bolt out, and the plate with the rusted bolt just slipped out. Cheers!
