View Full Version : Fuel Vent Issue

I ‘follow’ a pair of travellers called the dirty drifters on stalkbook. The following is reproduced with permission, in the hope it helps others:
Like many a misadventure, the first issue started with a loud fart. Despite accusations levelled at the driver, it turned out that this improper noise was emanating from the Land Rovers fuel cap. The relief valve within the cap was letting air into the tank every 2-3 seconds with a loud gurgling sound.
Clearly our fuel system had a venting issue, and it turns out this was due to dust ingress within the air intake system for the fuel tank. This air enters via the charcoal cannister and had blocked it up completely. Unfortunately this intake does not have a proper filter, only a plastic mesh , and despite being placed up high near the fuel filler has still been exposed to huge amounts of bulldust on our trip.
We managed to unblock the cannister with our trusty onboard compressor and all seems to be well again.

I haven't noticed any vulgar noises from our fuel cap, but have heard a hiss of air going in when removing the cap to refuel. Maybe I should check to see if there's a blocked air relief filter on mine.
Cheers.

The small hiss is normal.

Mine sometimes farts and gurgles when I close the rear driver's side door (closest to fuel cap). Thought this was normal, maybe not?

I quite often do that as well and is quite normal for me without closing any doors. :)

Likewise.
Is it an issue? @veebs, do you know? And can I check it myself? I don't know what the third photo is of.

The V8 has a paper filter in the breather which I blew out on a number of occasions. it was surprising how much dust it caught. I wondered why the V8 had a filter and the others didn't.

No idea - I merely repeated what I read elsewhere. I reckon it's worth a look at it though, even if only as an educational inspection.
I was wondering if it wouldn't make sense to put a foam cover over this thing, but i'm also only going off what I see in these pics... Something that lets air in, but with a big surface area to stop/slow dust

Your logic is sound, however the foam will tend to hold the dust in, where as all things being equal the pipe will breathe a little then stop - allowing dirt to drop away. The foam will capture the dirt, not allow it to drop away and will then combine with moisture to become a solid brick of mud, blocking all flow.

Fair point Tombie. I haven't heard/read of this whole issue before (have you?), so it may just be an isolated case, rather than an inherent design weak point.

Not heard of it on one of these.
Have seen a case where a wasp had made a nest in a tank vent on a Patrol.
Very rare I’d suggest.

I had mine in a similar environment to the original post, spending a week thundering around in the bulldust in Karijini. And now I'm back in suburbia, I notice it farts when I close the rear right door.
I'll have a poke around this weekend, but I'll probably take it into my indy for a look-see to be sure.

Are you referring to the SLS fart or the tank Bubble?

That's a good question.
There's a definite fart when I close the rear right door when the car's been parked overnight. It sounds like it's coming from the fuel filler area. I'm not seeing any issues/faults with the EAS.

I imagine an instant noise when closing the door might be this issue, whereas a sound 4-5 seconds after closing will be the suspension system

I've yet to get under and have a look, but I can confirm it's definitely coming from the fuel filler. I gave the panel a thump yesterday morning, and sure enough ... PPPFFFFT! [biggrin]

You are aware that they do hold some pressure right?

Yup. But, it's been in a very dusty environment, and it's only started making that farting noise since its return.

I dont hear any noises from mine, but it took forever to fill the tank yesterday, so much so, that 50 odd lts will do.
Its been getting longer an more difficult to fill in recent months, perhaps i should investigate [bigwhistle]

You haven’t accidentally tripped the gasoline flap have you? I did this once and didn’t notice the flap was triggered and filling was a pain in the arse.

I’m so glad I don’t have that in mine anymore.
What a PITA it was!

Say what????
"Triggered",, how does that happen, and if you have some info on it,, love to hear from you.
Strangely, I think I had more trouble when I only had the single tank, but a bit hard to remember as it was only 3-4 fills before the aux tank went in. I have had issues before, but if you hold the nozzle at just the right angle, it's not really a problem. But it's never been this bad.

Sounds like your breather has formed a kink in the hose somewhere.
