View Full Version : Gear selector - Stuck!

The gear selector on my MY15 D4 is stuck! Had the car at a panel repair shop and received a call from them that they cannot turn the dial to put the car into Drive. Went over and sure enough - started the car, the selector rose, but it would not turn. Rocked the car back and forth, but it wouldn't budge.
Had to get Roadside Assist to come and pull that red lever under the centre console to put the car into neutral and then towed away to a dealer.
Does anyone know if this is a problem that can be easily fixed, or some major part replacement?

Most likely brake switch, if it doesn’t send signal the gear solenoid won’t release.

Tombie - Is that the foot brake switch, or the park brake (had the park brake module replaced last year)? Also is it a coincidence that I have a low brake pad warning light on at the moment?

Foot brake [emoji6]
The low of warning is just that, doesn’t impact the rest (I’ve been driving with my low pad warning for 3,000km whilst I clear other toys from my workshop ready to do the job).

In my D4 you need to press the foot brake to start the car.
So if the car was started ok, doesn't that suggest the foot brake switch is ok?

If it’s marginal it may work but yes good indication.
Good thinking...

Dealer investigated by carrying out diagnostic check. Found fault code for gear selector module. Carried out an update of module - all good after update.
Thankfully it didn't cost anything because I already had a massive bill for the 48 month service and replacing front brake pads [bigsad]

This sounds like the problem that occurred soon after the rotary selector / 8-speed was introduced where the time allowed for the selector to rise before declaring a fault wasn't sufficient in some circumstances. The original fix was to replace the selector module but then the s/w was changed to allow more time.

Well as a matter of fact we do travel quite a bit and in some remote places towing a large van and it could have happened anywhere. Just lucky this time that it was in town!

If something were sitting on the gear selector as it rises, what would happen? Would it flag a fault that needs a reset?

Is there an LR fix for this? Seems like another thing we can really do without, not being able to select gears. I love the "D" but reading things like this make me wonder why sometimes..... :)

It would have to be something quite heavy to affect it rising - something like more than a few kilos!
