Hello All,

Could someone please let me know if the brake shoes for the four cylinder long wheel base (109 inch) chassis has a brake shoe lining whose width is either 2 1/4 inches or 58 Millimetres?

Would having a brake lining width of 2 1/4 inches or 58 Millimetres identify them as Part Number STC3944 which is described as matching the Series 2A - 3 Four cylinder motor in a 109 inch chassis?

Also, if the dimension of 2 1/4 inches or 58 inches are for the four cylinder 109 inch chassis what would the part number be for the rear brake shoes?

The radius of the shoes are the same as that for the six cylinder 109. However the brake shoe lining width is much narrower than the shoes fitted to my six cylinder motor LWB chassis.

The car is 1970 2A short wheel base chassis that has had a Toyota 1B four cylinder diesel engine and a set of Range Rover differentials fitted to it by the late previous owner.

At the same time the running gear modifications took place I think the previous owner may have up-graded the brakes from the 88 inch specifications to the 109 inch chassis ones. So I am left guessing which shoes are currently on the vehicle and I can only measure their width. The current shoes are worn out and I would like to be able to order the correct ones to replace the old parts with.

Thank you.

Kind regards
Lionel

Lionel,
LWB is listed as 57.1mm front & rear, SWB 38.1mm front & rear.
6-cyl Front is 76.2mm

You could measure the drum diameter too Lionel. 88" had 10 inch drums and 109" had 11 inch drums. 4 cyl had 2 1/4" wide shoes front and rear and 6 cyl had 3" wide shoes on the front and 2 1/4" wide on the rear. Your 88 may have had 109" brakes fitted as it was a bolt up brake upgrade. Better brakes for the 88"

As a further note to complete this, late Series 3 109 had "six cylinder " brakes fitted to fours.
