View Full Version : D3 guy tried his luck!

I have an 01 4.6 Rangie and a guy in his new lookin D3 4.0 s was taking the same way home from work late last week in western Brisbane. We must have been like minded because I thought to myself I wonder how the acceleration is in one of those with the extra gears. So we eventually came to the roundabout at the start of the Western freeway and both planted it. He was in the inside lane so came out the better off the round about and I had to pull in behind him as there was only one lane onto the freeway. (they seem to handle pretty well anyway around corners and we weren't being too foolish). He kept his foot down as I did accelerating up to 100 and seemed pretty equal. That was about the end of it and the vehicles seemed pretty even while accelerating. It was a bit of fun but wouldn't push it too far past the 90 kph limit as it would be too dangerous. I would like a rematch on a straight standing start up to 100 that would be interesting.

Looks like I'll have to leave the 4.4ltr ones alone I dont think I'd keep up. Oh well.

Charlie

PS. I know the road isnt a race track but we didn't make any sharp cornering and the road was clear ahead and the cars in the other lane were doing 100 already so no harm done. These cars aren't sports cars anyway I think we both realised this and took it pretty easy.

Last December, I had a trip in a red RR Mk III diesel owned by a bloke up on the Gold Coast ( GCLRO member?). Boy, does that thing get along quite nicely - a few cars tried to out-accelerate this beast and were soon put in their place. https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Well Ron sounds like the p38's are old technology now. Still don't want to be out done by an oiler now thats embarasing.

Hi Charlie and Ron. Charlie, before you pair got to the roundabout, had you both been giving it a bit of stick. The reason I ask, the D3s have a self determining fuel usage set up where the accelerators use is continually monitored and if the D3 is being driven economically then the D3 accelerates economically. Even if the peddle is suddenly floored, the vehicle still continues to accelerate economically.

You need to be giving it some stick for a few minutes before the vehicle starts to accelerate accordingly.

I’ve noticed, with my wife’s D3, if I have been driving docilely and suddenly accelerate hard, the D3 gently starts off and then gets it’s wind.

If on the other hand, I have been giving the D3 a bit of stick and I suddenly hit accelerator, the acceleration rate nearly snaps your head off.

My point being, next time you come up against a D3 and you want to see how it goes, you have to get it going first.

Cheers.

PS that was my RR Ron was on about.

How many KW's do the 4L 6 D3's punch out? Matt

drivesafe

Hi Ace, the D3 is averaging about 14 lt / 100 kms around town so far and that depends on whether I’m driving or the wife is.

It hasn’t done 10k yet, so it’s nowhere near run in yet.

Cheers.

I would have thought the weight difference would have come into play more, but that 6speed ZF must also make the D3 hussle.

drivesafe -- this is what I don't like about some modern cars, they think they are "smarter than the average bear".

What happens if you have been sitting behind some slow traffic for sometime and then an opening appears? The D3 says, uh-uh you ain't going anywhere. No over-ride I imagine?

Hi Nobby, thanks for the correction.

This is something I have yet to discover but yes it could be interesting.

The RR does the same but the change in response times when there is a change in driving patens is much, much faster.

So the real question is, who get's better ecconomy? https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ In our case it's actually me... even in the MINI 8O

Just a question on the adaptive driving modes, does the D3 have a "kickdown mode" where at 100% throttle it does all it can?

Doesn't switching to 'sport' mode force a re-map - at least of the gearbox?

Had to make a mention on this one  Assuming we are talking the D3 V8, it is 220kw and 425Nm and is a 4.4. Obviously Drivesafe knows more about me on the fuel side of things, so thanks I wasnt aware of that component, though I have noticed it. If Im up for a bit of a "burl" i kick it over into the sequential thingy ( pick the non technical person  ) and immediately it is ready for action, so I use it at the lights to woop someone or for overtaking especially if going up a hill. I have just dropped it in today for its 12000 k service ( ive only had it 3 mths 8O ) and fuel usage is averaging around 15.3/100km which for a V8 I think is pretty good. Since its been in for service Ive got the TDV6, I think S model, ie not all the bells and whistles that the HSE has got and I tell ya its a nice car, not the grunt of the V8 but perky, in hindsight Id almost have got the HSE TdV6.

Also charliebrisbane, if you ever want to go head to head, give us a hoy 8) ,

Howdy Stevo

I think Charliebrisbane has a P38 Rangie (2001), so has the last of the Buick/Rover V8 (not the BMW or Jag) engine from the late 1950/60s.

He was playing with a 4.0ltr V6 D3 (the old Ford Cologne engine from the '60s).

Sounds like a vintage car rally really:lol: https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

The 01 4.6 put out 160 kw and 400NM as it has the slightly tweaked thingumies, I dont know what exactly.

Hey Noddy,

I just realised that re reading it that you were referring to the p38, I misread and thought you were talking about the D3 V8 and its specifications. When its at full wail you can feel the 220kw https://www.aulro.com/afvb/.

I like the old stuff, don't get me wrong! Agree, it was a bit cheeky though https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

Those two engines are probably two of the most successful engines of the last 50 years. Both Rover/BMC/LR/MG and Ford have done very well out of those engines.

Stevo, you and I have got to have a run.

I’ve had a few runs against the wife's D3 and the RR has won every time but I would be interested in seeing how the RR goes against the D3 V8.

I gave Outlaw and Camo a run last year after one of our meetings and I was surprised at how much faster both off the mark and get flight, the RR is.

The RR is flash fast to about 60 kph and then you might as well take a packed lunch with you while it winds out to 100.

The wife's D3 seems to accelerate evenly all the way to 100.

BTW, I don’t use sports mode in either vehicle, cause I’m too lazy to move the stick. 8)

Only time I take either Landy out of full auto is in hill decent, to assist in braking.

The guys at land Vehicle spares have a race Defender with a super charged 4.6 in it. From memory they said it pumps out around 500 horse power. Don't know what that converts to in Kw.
That was with only a small amount of boost and a little work on the heads. They were looking to up the boost and do more to the engine. At least that was the plan about 12 months ago.

If any of you guys come to the Maroon Dam SEQ gathering if it happens I'll take you on there. Disco95 500 HP is probably around the mid 300's in KW that sounds like a pretty moddes 4.6. I want one. Mind you it would probably mean replacing the entire drivetrain to cope with that kind of grunt. Then if I did that I wouldn't have to worry about these Range Rover wannabe's in their D3's. (I think I'm in trouble now).
